11 More Demolished Grounds I wish I had seen

11) Treyew Road

Treyew Road, previously home of Truro City based in Cornwall. Treyew Road is not technically demolished as of yet but Truro have moved out to play their home games in Plymouth for the foreseeable as Treyew Road will become a supermarket. Truro have played at Treyew Road for many many years which during that time included a temporary groundshare with Torquay United but times is up and is at last the Stadium for Cornwall happening? Could this ground boost Truro’s fanbase? Could we possibly see a team from Cornwall in the Football League?

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 4/10 – On closer observation of the team, I haven’t heard too much noise from fans at Treyew Road.
  • The Ground: 4/10 – For the level that this club is at and wants to be at, I think it could have been better, the stands look good and it looks a bit picturesque but I think it could have been better.
  • Overall Experience: 8/10 – I’m sure I would have loved a trip down to Cornwall and it would have been great to see Cornwall’s most successful football club! Hopefully one day I’ll get to go there one day and see the Stadium for Cornwall!

10) Leeds Road

Leeds Road, previously home of Huddersfield Town based in West Yorkshire. Huddersfield played at Leeds Road for 86 years before moving to their new and current ground the John Smith Stadium. The club have been in and around the second and third tier of English Football, but one year they defied the odds and made it to the Premier League!! They stayed there for two seasons before going back down to the Championship. It’s definitely been a good move for the club!!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 9/10 – A loud fanbase at their new ground it has to be said and the same has to have been said of their old ground.
  • The Ground: 8/10 – A big old school ground which the likes are scarcely seen in this day and age.
  • Overall Experience: 7.5/10 – Always would have been good to visit a ground with a lot of character!

9) Boothferry Park

Boothferry Park, previously home of Hull City based in East Yorkshire. Hull played there for 56 years before moving to the KCOM Stadium which is their home ground to this day. The club was in the third tier at the time of moving and have since had three spells in the Premier League and have been a make stay in the Championship up until this season… It’s still been a great move for the club!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 7/10 – A great fanbase! Imagine hearing “Mauled by the Tigers” at that ground!
  • The Ground: 6/10 – Another old school ground that is hardly seen in today’s game.
  • Overall Experience: 6/10 – A fairly decent day out I believe it would have been.

19/30

8) Ayresome Park

Ayresome Park, previously home of Middlesbrough FC based in the North East. Middlesbrough played at Ayresome for just over 90 years before moving to their current ground, the Riverside Stadium. This was one of the grounds that was used during the World Cup of 1966 and has seen the likes of Brian Clough up front for many years!! The club had been in and out of the Premier League for many years when the Riverside first opened with a famous UEFA Cup run in 2006 that saw them reach the final! But in recent times, the club has been stuck in the Championship… It’s still been a great move overall in my opinion.

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 9/10 – A lot of ex players and fans have praised the old atmosphere at the ground!! It must have been special!
  • The Ground: 8.5/10 – It looked a great ground with terraces behind the goal and with a good layout.
  • Overall Experience: 7.5/10 – It would have been lovely to have seen it for sure with the atmosphere that was touted by people associated with the club during that time.

25/30

7) The Den

The Den, previously home of Millwall FC based in London. Millwall’s current ground is also called the Den but this is the Old Den I will be talking about. Millwall played at the Old Den for 84 years before moving to the New Den which is their current ground. Overall I would say it has been an ok move as the club have been mainly in the Championship but have in the past fallen into League One whereas in the Old Den, the club had been in the top flight.

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 10/10 – “The Millwall Roar” would have been something I wish I had seen with many fans and footballers saying that it was intimidating!
  • The Ground: 6.5/10 – It looked a nice ground from the pictures with terraces behind the goal can only mean one thing!
  • Overall Experience: 9/10 – It would have been iconic to experience the Millwall Roar for sure!

25.5/30

6) Springfield Park

Springfield Park, previously home of Wigan Athletic based in Greater Manchester. A number of Wigan teams had played there over the years but in 1932, Wigan Athletic were formed and played there until the turn of the Millennium. They moved into their current ground the DW Stadium after leaving Springfield Park. This has been a fantastic move for the club! They have risen from the non league and gone all the way to the Premier League and winning the FA Cup!! Sadly the club find themselves in League One today and in financial trouble… Let’s hope Wigan can rise back from this!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 3/10 – Not the loudest fan base unfortunately.
  • The Ground: 7/10 – A very unique ground that is not seen at all in this day and age, not in the Football League anyway.
  • Overall Experience: 6/10 – I’ve never come across Wigan on my travels, but seeing this would have been great before the move I’m sure!

16/30

5) Vetch Field

Vetch Field, previously home of Swansea City based in South Wales. Swansea played there for nearly a century before moving to their current ground the Liberty Stadium. Since the move, the club has progressed up the leagues all the way to the Premier League and seen the club win a League Cup!! It has been a fantastic move for the club!!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 7/10 – Known for having a good atmosphere says the fans.
  • The Ground: 7/10 – An old fashioned ground with a lot of personality.
  • Overall Experience: 6/10 – I’m sure it would have been a decent day out in Wales!

20/30

4) Goldstone Ground

The Goldstone Ground, previously home of Brighton & Hove Albion based in East Sussex. Brighton had played at the Goldstone for nearly all the 1900s before moving to the Withdean Stadium in which they played in up until 2011 before moving to their current ground the AMEX Stadium. Since moving, the club has progressed all the way to the Premier League where they remain today. Moving has been tricky to start with but overall has been a good one!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 5/10 – A fairly decent atmosphere at the ground so they say.
  • The Ground: 5/10 – A unique ground to say the least.
  • Overall Experience: 7/10 – I’m sure being by the seaside would have added to the day out!

17/30

3) National Hockey Stadium

The National Hockey Stadium, previously home of Wimbledon FC and Milton Keynes Dons based in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. The Stadium was used for Hockey (Believe it or not) when it first opened until 2003 when Wimbledon FC moved in. They played there for one season before the club was renamed as Milton Keynes Dons who played there for three seasons before moving to their current ground, Stadium MK. It has been a good move overall as the club has progressed to the Championship albeit for one season but they have one of the nicest grounds in England in my opinion.

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 2/10 – Not a loud fanbase sadly.
  • The Ground: 7.5/10 – It was a nice ground for the level it was at and definitely suitable for the Football League.
  • Overall Experience: 6/10 – I’m certain visiting a ground not made for football would have been a great experience watching football there.

15.5/30

2) Burnden Park

Burnden Park, previously home of Bolton Wanderers based in Greater Manchester. Bolton played at Burnden for just over a century before moving to their current ground the Reebok Stadium. The club became a make stay for years in the Premier League before going down in 2012. Since then the club has struggled financially and today find themselves in the fourth tier… Despite this, it has definitely been a good move for the club!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 7/10 – A good atmosphere stated by fans who attended years ago.
  • The Ground: 6.5/10 – Another ground you don’t see the likes of in today’s game.
  • Overall Experience: 7/10 – It would have been a great ground to tick off!!

20.5/30

  1. Plough Lane

Plough Lane, previously home of Wimbledon FC based in South London. Wimbledon played there for 79 years progressing from non league all the way to the top tier and winning an FA Cup! The club played there up until 1991 when they moved to Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park due to the ruling of All Seater Stadiums. The club played there until 2003 when the club was moved to Milton Keynes and renamed. A terrible move for the club which has seen them rebranded as we know it but the move had to be done sadly but the new Wimbledon have finally built a new ground on Plough Lane so the future is bright for Wimbledon!!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 9/10 – They weren’t called the Crazy Gang for nothing!!
  • The Ground: 5/10 – A worn down ground towards the end of it’s time but plenty of personality.
  • Overall Experience: 10/10 – This would have been an iconic visit at the time! I’m sure I will see the new Plough Lane one day!!
