Wisbech Town

Fenland Stadium, home of Wisbech Town whose ground is based in Norfolk with the town of Wisbech being based in Cambridgeshire. Nicknamed the “Fenmen” with their home ground being Fenland Stadium.

The UK’s poor weather has put pay to many fixtures up and down the country but not this relegation dogfight between Wisbech Town & Shirebrook Town and it’s my first away day with Shirebrook Town since a visit to Louth Town back in 2015!

So onto the A1 and then the A17 and into the ground with 2 hours to go before kick off!

Time rolls on and out come the teams, this could prove significant at the end of the season! May the best team win! But come on the brook!!

Kick Off! The game begins with both teams probing for openings but finding little room to operate in the early stages. Shirebrook are enjoying more possession, but Wisbech’s solid defensive line ensuring no goals from Shirebrook so far.

29th minute, Wisbech have grown more into this game as the half rolls on. A well-delivered cross from the right wing finds a Wisbech player in space at the near post. The header… But it’s somehow off the post!

2 minutes later and Shirebrook’s Fabian Johnson has it now, 25 yards out and he goes for goal… OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! What a strike! The ball swerved in the air and nestled into the top corner of the net. 0-1! That’s how it stays at half time.

Second half, it’s all about Wisbech as they throw everything at Shirebrook in an attempt to get back into the game. Wisbech dominating possession, but Shirebrook’s resilience and disciplined defending are keeping the home side at bay.

About 75 minutes on the clock and Wisbech play down the left… He’s brought down there the Wisbech man and… Uh-oh! It’s a second yellow and Shirebrook are down to 10 men…

Wisbech are trying to unlock the stubborn Shirebrook backline, with a number of crosses and set pieces, but Shirebrook’s keeper is in inspired form between the posts, pulling off a string of vital saves. As the minutes ticked down, the pressure mounted, but Shirebrook’s ten men stand tall!

Play goes on… And Shirebrook hold on to what could be a massive win at the end of the season!!

FT: Wisbech Town 0-1 Shirebrook Town

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 4/10 – A few jeers and cheers throughout and Wisbech had a small section behind the goal that gave it a good go!
  • The Ground: 5/10 – Quite basic and it reminds me of Sleaford Town but better with the covered stands behind each end.
  • Expense: 10/10 – Freebie!
  • Overall Experience: 9/10 – Really enjoyed that! Being on the road with Shirebrook again, seeing them win and a very friendly welcome from the Wisbech faithful!
