Glossop North End

Surrey Street, home of Glossop North End based in Derbyshire. Nicknamed the “Hillmen” as they are based in the Peak District. The smallest town in England whose team has played in the English First Division!! Would you believe that!!? This small football club once played in what we now call the Premier League! But today, Glossop find themselves in the Northern Premier League Division One South East.

10th October 2020 and for the second time this week, I will be seeing Glossop North End play, but this time on their home turf and with the Super Stag. Kidsgrove Athletic are the visitors today.

On the train I get to Manchester Piccadilly to meet the Super Stag and then off to Glossop from there… Not the easiest to get to.

A lovely little town they have here! And the views… Wow! A taste of Glossop market, one of the nicest cheeseburgers I’ve ever had!! “I’M NOT VEGAN! I’M NOT VEGAN! I’M NOT VEGAN ANYMORE! I’M NOT VEGAN ANYWAY!”

£9 to get into this one! Prestigious! One word I will use to describe this ground: ‘Picturesque’. I’m sure others who have visited would say the same. Kick Off! Glossop starting the better here and dominating possession of the ball. Reece Brown with the ball now for Glossop, he goes for goal… Deflected… Wide! Corner for Glossop! It’s pinball… But cleared away by Kidsgrove.

The Super Stag now got word of a fellow twitter friend being here and went to find him. Another ground hopper we’ve met at a match! A Tranmere fan! I wonder what Simon from the Inbetweeners would say to us all? Not much action for the rest of the first half and the score at half time was goalless… Don’t spoil my goal run lads!!

Second half, a slow start to the half… “It’s not looking good is it?” I said. 65 minutes gone and the game starting to heat up. The ball played through towards Fosu-Mensah, the keeper is committed and gets there first just, it’s cleared to a Glossop player who crosses… Cleared by Kidsgrove.

70 minutes gone and Kidsgrove starting to grow in this game now. Diskin with the ball on the right, he measures a cross, in towards JOSH THORPE… OFF THE BAR!! So close for Kidsgrove.

86 minutes now, Kidsgrove starting to dominate, here they come again! The ball comes to Jack Bromfield, he shoots… Just wide!! He should have scored. Into stoppage time now, is the goal run coming to an end? Here comes Ben Chesters, he’s beaten the keeper to the ball and he’s around him…… OH WHAT A CHALLENGE!! Devon Matthews for Glossop with a last second save sliding in and managing to force a miss! Claps all around the ground and deservedly so.

Last chance now and a corner for Kidsgrove, it’s now or never! In it comes, cleared! The Referee looks at his watch and blows for full time… 34 games without a goalless draw is over!!

FT: Glossop North End 0-0 Kidsgrove Athletic

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 3/10 – Not much noise from the fans but a group of Glossop fans behind the goal tried to rally on their team.
  • The Ground: 8/10 – A nice little facility all in all but the views of this ground are second to none! Very hard to focus on the game with views like that!!
  • Expense: 6/10 – Whilst I’m Happy paying £9 to get in, I wanted to see goals…
  • Overall Experience: 7/10 – I had a good day in a beautiful little town! It was great to see the Super Stag again after a while and potentially another friend to ground hop with! The 0-0 certainly did not dampen my spirits… It had to end sometime!
