Brewery Field, home of Spennymoor Town based in County Durham and compete in the National League North. Nicknamed the “Moors” as it’s in the name “Spennymoor”. It’s a Bank Holiday double!!! Now the race to get to Spennymoor from Northallerton for me and the Merry Miller! A head start for us as the very kind groundhopper we met at Northallerton Town has given us a lift back to Northallerton station!
30 minutes later and we have landed at Durham station and now off we go to the bus station… Wait no we’re not, 2 very kind York City fans have let us jump in their taxi to the ground with them!! How about that! Great to hear their stories of the club over the years… Apart from the time they beat Mansfield in the play-offs in 2012 anyway…
Here we are in Spennymoor in plenty of time!! Without those lifts we would have been due to get into Spennymoor with 15 minutes to spare! But here we are sharing a few drinks with the 2 York fans! How about it!! Plenty of York fans here today and the atmosphere is starting to build! Bring it on!!!
Time’s up and the game is drawing nearer, off we go to the ground! £10 to watch this National League North tie! Right then! “We’re the City boys making all the noise! Everywhere we go!” Spennymoor: “We’re the Black & White army!” York: “Yorkshire! Yorkshire!” The atmosphere is building nicely!!!
Kick Off! 5 minutes in and York have a corner, “HI HO CITY! CITY HI HO!” In comes the corner… It comes for Clayton Donaldson, he makes space for the shot… Blocked! It comes back to him… OFF THE LINE! Spennymoor clear. 8 minutes in and Spennymoor have the ball on the left, it’s crossed in and here’s Glen Taylor at the back stick… Over. Great start to the game here!
13th minute now and York play forward, it’s played to Clayton Donaldson on the right in the box, he plays it across goal and Kurt Willoughby is there… GOAL!!! He puts it in at the far post and York City lead here in County Durham!!! 0-1!!! “YORKSHIRE! YORKSHIRE!”
“We are York! We are York! We are York!” York fans continuing to bounce!! 19 minutes on the clock and York have a free kick on the left hand side, it’s crossed in… It’s headed across goal from the back post towards Willoughby AGAIN!! AND… Somehow Spennymoor manage to clear the danger! So close for York there!
21 minutes now and Spennymoor come down the left, it’s crossed into the middle, Glen Taylor tries to get there… He hasn’t and the keeper spills it… It’s come off Sam Fielding… It’s gone in!! It’s an own goal! 1-1!! The Spennymoor fans stood with the York fans enjoying that one!! “We are York! We are York We are York!” York fans spirits not broken yet though! “MOORS MOORS!” Spennymoor fans spirit is starting to grow!
23 minutes on the clock now and Spennymoor come down the right, it’s played in to Rob Ramshaw in the box in plenty of space and he shoots… Good save by Jameson in the York goal!
The lack of segregation here today at the ground is proving to be a mistake at this end as the 2 sets of fans are beginning to argue and tensions are boiling here… Stewards are starting to come to this end now… “You’re just a bus stop in Durham! Bus stop in Durham!” I like that one personally! “We’re the Black & White army!”
The game has certainly slowed down from how it started but the atmosphere hasn’t! “My garden shed is bigger than this!” & “Da da da football in a library!” It certainly isn’t a library here today! 36 minutes and York have a corner, “HI HO CITY! CITY HI HO!” It’s played short, crossed in now… Keeper collects.
44th minute and Spennymoor come down the left with Frank Mulhern, he loses the ball but Scott McLean gets it and he gets into the box and he shoots… Jameson saves again!! 1 minute later and here come York down the left, it’s crossed in… It’s dummied and the keeper is committed and it comes to Clayton Donaldson with the goal gaping… He couldn’t miss that!!!! And York have the lead again!!! 1-2!!
That would be the last action of the half and York go in at half time 2-1 up. Second half, “We are Spennymoor! Say we are Spennymoor!” 48th minute and Spennymoor come forward down the left, it’s crossed in towards the back post, it’s headed across the middle towards Glen Taylor… Great block by Matty Brown! Corner for Spennymoor, in it comes… Cleared! “We get to go home! You have to live here! We get to go home!” Don’t think York fans like Spennymoor…
“Football League! You’ll Never sing that!” Spennymoor respond with: “Football League and you f****d it up!” York respond to that with: “Twice in a week! We won at Wembley!” Who won that banter battle then?
57th minute and York have the ball in the Spennymoor half, it’s lumped into the box, Matty Brown brings it down and sets up Beck to shoot… Brilliant save by the keeper!! Corner for York… Cleared by Spennymoor.
2 minutes later and Spennymoor come forward down the left, they get into the box and it’s played across goal to Glen TAYLOR!! OH NO!! HE’S SOMEHOW PUT IT WIDE!! Absolute sitter! If Soccer AM saw that, he would be on Taxi next week… Should be 2-2!
Good spell for Spennymoor now, can they find that equaliser? Spennymoor come down the left again, Scott McLean is played through on the left side of the box, no flag here, he shoots… Strong arm by Jameson in the York goal! York not happy with the linesman there!
2 minutes later and Spennymoor play a long ball forward and it finds Frank Mulhern who’s through on goal here, he shoots… Jameson saves again!! Brilliant goalkeeping! 67 minutes and it’s Spennymoor coming forward yet again, it’s played forward, they drive into the box, played to Jamie Chandler who gets a sight of goal… He’s missed it… How many chances are Spennymoor going to waste here? That should have been a goal!
“Red & Blue army!” York fans still going strong! 72nd minute and York have a free kick in the Spennymoor half, crossed into the box, it goes towards the far post and it’s Matty Brown who heads it back across, Beck is there… It’s gone in off the post!!! York have got it! Spennymoor live to rue their missed chances! If you don’t put the ball in the onion bag, you will be made to pay! York fans don’t care one bit!!
“HI HO CITY! CITY HI HO!” 76th minute and York come forward with Mark Beck, he plays it through for Clayton Donaldson who shoots… He’s scuffed it wide… “Bring your tools bring your tools! Adriano!” York fans still in party mood here!
84th minute and York come forward down the right with Mackenzie Heaney, he cuts inside 25 yards out and he shoots… Just wide! What a goal that would have been! 87th minute and Spennymoor come down the left, it’s played across to Glen Taylor… He’s put it wide again! That’s just the story of his day sadly for him and Spennymoor… York would go on to see the game out! What a day it has been for them!

- Atmosphere: 9/10 – Both sets of fans were fantastic today but York were better I have to say! Chanting all game! Great fan base they have!
- The Ground: 8.5/10 – It’s a really nice ground they have here! Brilliant for the level! Lots of personality but my only criticism is that it is slightly sloped…
- Expense: 9/10 – £10 is decent for this level! A great game it was with a good atmosphere too!
- Overall Experience: 9/10 – Great to meet the 2 York fans and spend the day with them at the game!! A great game and great atmosphere! Just the silliness between the 2 fans after the Spennymoor equaliser costing it a full mark…
