Denaby United

Old Road, Conisbrough, home of Denaby United based in South Yorkshire. The club was formed in 1895 and had done rather well!! But sadly in 2002 they were booted out of their home ground by the local welfare and the club dissolved… They may have dissolved but they did not die!!! They were gone for 9 years. In 2011 they reformed and today they play in the Doncaster Rovers Saturday Premier Division.

5th December 2020 and the second national lockdown is over!! Football is back!!!! Me and the Merry Miller had been deliberating all week where to go and we eventually decided Oughtibridge was the one… But then I got the call to say no Denaby United’s game is on let’s go there instead. Make your mind up will you lad!!! Off to Denaby I go!!

What a view that is!!!
I’m guessing he’s retired…

We eventually made it to the ground and at first glance, we had a sense of disappointment… No stands but hey, let’s hope the game isn’t 0-0 to add to it. Free entry for this one!! YEAH BABY YEAH!!! Dearne & District the visitors here today for this Doncaster Senior Premier match. A groundhopper friend we met at Nostell made a prediction of 5-4 score line for this match would he be right?

Kick Off! Denaby starting the brighter of the 2 teams here, 7 minutes in and Denaby have the ball on the right, the ball is crossed in, it goes towards Callum Black!!! It’s 1-0 to Denaby!!!! A great start by the home side here!!

Denaby continuing to shine here, 24 minutes and the ball comes to Steve Ellor on the edge of thee Dearne box and he goes for goal… Saved but the keeper has spilled it… He recovers and retrieves the ball this time. 28 minutes gone and here come Dearne this time, the ball on the right is crossed in and cleared to the edge of the box, it’s hit back towards goal on the volley… Just over!! So close to an equaliser there.

31 minutes now and Denaby on the attack again now, they have the ball on the right and it comes in, towards the far post… OFF THE POST!!! On the volley but number 7 for Denaby can’t quite hit the target. 37 minutes gone and Dearne have a corner, it comes in, it’s AIDEN BARNETT… 1-1!! Free header and in!

1 minute later and Dearne come again, the ball on the right is delivered, it’s number 10 for Dearne… How’s he missed that? 6 yards out he must score!! He’s put it wide… 44 minutes and Denaby have a corner, the cross comes in, Brett Lovell is there… 2-1!! Same result as 7 minutes ago! Right on half time now and Denaby have the ball again, the ball is played forward to 39 year old Steve Ellor and he’s beaten the offside trap, he’s in… HE SCORES!!!! 3-1!!! No mercy fro Denaby here!! The score at half time is 3-1 to Denaby.

Second half, Dearne looking the stronger of the 2 teams now, 53 minutes gone and they have a corner, in it comes, cleared back to the corner taker who drives into the box, he’s been tripped… And the referee agreed with me, it’s a penalty!! Dearne’s number 9 steps up… AND SCORES!!! 2-3!! And what a game we’ve got now!!! If only the keeper hadn’t moved…

Denaby captain Ashley Cantrill not happy with the decision to award the penalty and confronts the Referee. The Referee has shown a yellow card and has pointed to the sideline and he’s walking… It’s a sin bin!!! A rule at this level is that referee’s can sin bin players for 10 minutes for dissent, a first for me personally.

Dearne looking really strong now, 64 minutes and they have the ball in midfield, the ball is played through towards number 10 who’s through on goal… HE’S DONE IT!!!! 3-3!! What a game this is!!!!

The game starting to fizzle out now with both teams having a fair share of the ball but no real chances. 79 minutes on the clock and a corner for Dearne, here it comes, towards number 8… IT’S THERE!! It’s a day for the corners!! That’s 3 now!!! And it’s 3-4!!! Dearne lead for the first time in the game!

Denaby starting to take hold of the game again but ultimately would fail to find the equaliser! 3-1 up and they messed it up sadly…

FT: Denaby United 3-4 Dearne & District

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 1/10 – Not many fans here and no singing unfortunately.
  • The Ground: 1/10 – No stands at the ground just an open field for the time being. Speaking to a member of the club today who said that they have permission to fence of this ground so I’m sure in the future this ground would definitely score higher.
  • Expense: 10/10 – Free entry to see 7 goals and one of the best games I’ve ever attended personally! Football is back ALRIGHT!!!!
  • Overall Experience: 9.5/10 – A great day out meeting friendly people at the club and seeing the Merry Miller once again made it a great day out. A stand away from being a 10! I don’t normally do grassroots level games but me and the Merry Miller sure did enjoy this one!!!!

21.5/40
