Phoenix Park, home of Dinnington Town based in South Yorkshire… And there’s me thinking it was Nottinghamshire… Shocker! Especially when ground hopping is supposed to make you good at Geography! And that I have been teaching it this week… They also play in the Central Midlands Premier North League at Step 7 of the non league pyramid. My third visit to this ground tonight after seeing Shirebrook Town here twice back in 2013 win by three goals respectively! But tonight it’s the visit of Club Thorne Colliery in a potential promotion clash here! Bring it on!!
Formerly a club of Step 6 for a number of years in the Northern Counties East League Division One but sadly after hovering around the relegation zone for a few years, the club resigned from the league and went into the Central Midlands where they are today, could they get themselves back into the Northern Counties one day?
The train to Doncaster… Yes that’s right!! I’ll be on YouTube once again for this one!!!! Match Days Joe will be with me tonight but not just him! His dad Dave will be joining us tonight as well!!! Bring it on!! The short journey across to Dinnington and here we are! £3 to get in here! Bring it on again! Great to see Mariner Chris here again! Especially after the disappointment of Grimsby’s game going down at the weekend! Out come the teams to the tune of Wiz Khalifa’s Black & Yellow!! Guess what colour kit Dinnington play in!?
Kick Off! 3 minutes in and Thorne lump it forward, Evan Fortune-West runs onto it, the Dinnington keeper hesitates… Fortune-West gets there and he drags it out to the left wing, he crosses it back in, Morgan Brown is there at the back stick… He’s headed it over… He should’ve done better! 7 minutes now and Thorne hit it long again, Dinnington get to it first and play it back to the keeper… He’s not controlled it very well and here’s Fortune-West for Thorne… Is that a foul there by the keeper? “No!” Says the Referee and Dinnington clear.
19th minute now and Dinnington have a free kick on the left hand side, it’s crossed in, it’s headed across goal by Dinnington… It’s there!!! They’ve scored!! Headed across goal and headed in by Lewis Twibell!! 1-0!!
28 minutes on the clock and Thorne play a long ball forward again, Fortune-West controls it down for Cory Goodwin to shoot from 25 yards out… Wide! 2 minutes later and Dinnington play a ball forward for Brad Sedgewick who’s through here, he shoots… Keeper saves but he gets it back…… Keeper saves again! Brilliant double save there by the Thorne keeper! It is a corner for Dinnington, in it comes… Keeper flaps at it and it falls to Cameron Hull… Keeper gets a touch on it and it’s another corner, in it comes… Thorne clear!
35th minute, Dinnington have a throw in on the left, played in, Brad Sedgewick gets onto it and charges into the box, keeper comes out and Sedgewick goes for the dink… The keeper gets back to it and Thorne survive! The game is heating up now with tackles flying in and bad mouthing from players to each other and to management, the Referee needs to get a grip here!
Right on half time now and Dinnington have a corner, in it comes… All the way over but Dinnington retrieve it, it’s played across low towards Aaron Moxam… Keeper saves… Dinnington players appealing for the goal but the linesman says the ball did not cross the line! Can’t tell from where we’re stood but here come Thorne on the break now… It comes to nothing and that is half time with Dinnington in the lead.
Second half, 53 minutes played and Dinnington come forward from the left, ball played into the box… Keeper comes out but Dinnington manage to keep it in and here’s Anj Gordon-Hides… Brilliant goal-line clearance from Thorne there with the keeper committed!! It is a corner, in it comes… Thorne clear the danger!
It’s a poor half with little to shout about from both teams… 75 minutes on the watch and Dinnington have the ball in their own half… Oh no!! A shocking challenge there from Morgan Brown… Two footed and off the ground… Dinnington not happy! Brad Hanson has gone in on him there… He could be in trouble and it’s a mass brawl now with both sets of players and management… The Referee has pulled Morgan Brown over… Red Card!! Deservedly so! He’s pulling Hanson over now… Yellow Card… He had to go for me there! He’s a lucky boy there for me! Thorne fans not happy! I wouldn’t be neither!
79 minutes now and Dinnington loft the ball into the box, the keeper comes for it… Oh no he’s dropped it and Dinnington get onto it… The keeper has brought down the Dinnington man there… Penalty! Definite for me there! Poor from the Thorne keeper and he’s presented Aaron Moxam with a chance to double Dinnington’s lead… Which he takes!!! It’s 2-0 to Dinnington!!
Thorne still lumping it long but Dinnington deal with the long ball pretty comfortably you have to say. Into stoppage time and Thorne have a free kick on the left wing, it’s whipped in, Callum Verhees with the header… Off the post… And it’s been forced in!!! Andy Walkden there to put in the rebound!! It’s 2-1!! But is it too little too late? Play restarts and Thorne go flying in to win the ball… But it is too little to late and the Referee blows for full time… A bit of afters in the tunnel between the players and management here… WWE is coming to Dinnington for the night!!
FT: Dinnington Town 2-1 Club Thorne Colliery
Ratings
- Atmosphere: 1/10 – A few in attendance but no chanting sadly.
- The Ground: 4/10 – A bit harsh again last time, it’s an ok ground, I like the stands and I like the stand names too! But it’s nothing too special in my book.
- Expense: 10/10 – £3 for 3 goals and a bit of drama!! Thank you!
- Overall Experience: 8/10 – Great to Meet Dave tonight and to see Mariner Chris along with Match Days Joe again!! It was a poor second half but it did make up for itself with the Red Card and drama as it went on and after the game!! A good night out overall!
