Brodsworth Welfare, home of GCT Doncaster FC based in South Yorkshire and play in the Doncaster Saturday Football League. A newly formed team after Brodsworth Main sadly went under which left the ground unused… But not for long!! The club has 2 teams: A and B. 5th September 2020 and it’s the B team who take on Denaby United! The B team also plays in the league above the A team… Strange? It certainly appears so, but those Brodsworth players have to play for someone now don’t they?
But first, it’s a double header as me, the Merry Miller and Ben the Blade are going to catch the first half of Wombwell Town in their match against Retford United. A first half of pure domination by Retford sees them 3-0 up at half time! But that is as much as we would see as GCT Doncaster was calling! But we’ll be back to Wombwell Town another time for a blog on their ground!!
Arrival at the ground just in time!! And it’s free entry too!! YEAH YEAH YEAH!! Kick Off! A bright start for Denaby who are taking the game to GCT here. 5 minutes in and Denaby come forward with the ball, the ball is played to Ashley Cantrill in the box, he makes space for the shot… AND SCORES!!! What a start!! 0-1!!
12 minutes gone and GCT have the ball in their own half… They’ve squandered possession and Steve Ellor has retrieved it and he bares down on goal… And shoots wide… He should’ve scored!
Denaby are still well on top here with GCT hardly creating anything. 36 minutes on the watch and Steve Ellor receives the ball for Denaby, he tries to make space on the edge of the box and does… AND SCORES!! Good finish!! Nothing more than Denaby have deserved! Denaby continued to press but the score at half time remained 0-2.
Second half, Denaby continuing to dominate possession here, can GCT come alive this half? The GCT manager is going to make a few changes, all of them in fact, could this help? Close to the hour mark now and GCT have a corner, in it comes, headed away by Denaby but not far, it falls to Sam Kirk who shoots… GOAL!!! Game on!! 1-2!!
61 minutes gone now and GCT are growing in confidence now. The ball falls to Joel Tomlinson who manages to get the ball under control, he goes for goal… OFF THE POST AND IN!!!!! It’s 2-2! Just like that!! Joel Tomlinson about 25 yards out in plenty of space with the shot and the Denaby keeper can’t keep it out, what a hit!
It’s all GCT now, they have woken up and arisen from the dumps and are playing with real confidence here! 69 minutes gone and Denaby have a corner, in it goes, and it’s danger here for GCT, the ball is loose, it falls to Dean Lucas in the box on the turn… OH HE’S SCORED!!! 2-3!! Not a good day to be defending corners… Dean Lucas was the right man in the right place to finish there!
73 minutes on the clock and Denaby come forward again and have the ball out wide, the cross comes in, deflected and that could go anywhere… OFF THE BAR!!! The ball is cleared by the GCT keeper, so close again for Denaby. GCT coming more into the game again now for the equaliser. GCT huffed and puffed but ultimately would not blow Denaby’s house down this time. A massive “GET IN!!” From the Denaby players as the final whistle was blown by the referee. A great day of football!! Now let’s get back for England Vs Iceland now!!
FT: GCT Doncaster FC 2-3 Denaby United
