Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Women

Worsbrough Dale Park, home of Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Women based in South Yorkshire and play their trade in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s League Open Age Division Two. My 400th ever game today!! From 200 grounds straight to 201 as me and the Merry Miller are back in the Ladies game and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Women vs Wickersley Youth Ladies is the selected game! Let’s hope it’s a cracker!

A race against time for me as I drive from Wisewood, Sheffield with 35 minutes to spare until kick off and it’s a 30 minute journey… Let’s hope there’s no hold ups! Tick Tock! Tick Tock! Tick Tock! And here I am… Just in time for kick off! Free Entry for this one! You bet it is! Just as I get onto Worsbrough Dale Park and the Referee blows his whistle to start the game! Phew!

Kick Off! The Merry Miller is here at last! Nice to see Ash here today as well! It is a poor game so far unfortunately… Both teams having good spells with the ball but no one can work their magic in the final third so far…

25 minutes in and Wickersley have a corner, in it comes… “HANDBALL!” Cry the Wickersley players… Penalty!! Worsbrough’s number 12 controlled that with her arm and a Penalty is given! Number 10 steps up for Wickersley… And she scores!! 0-1!!

36th minute and Wickersley play a through ball for number 14 to run onto, the keeper comes for it… They both get there at the same time and the Worsbrough defence get there and the keeper manages to claim the ball in her Penalty area… But the Referee has blown and has given a free kick to Wickersley just outside the box for a handball… A shocking decision in my opinion and everyone else’s… Clearly inside the box! No cards given! Number 10 steps up for Wickersley again… Over!

3 minutes later and Worsbrough come forward, it’s played in to number 10 in the box and she’s through, she shoots… And she scores!!! It’s the equaliser!! 1-1!! 2 minutes after that and Wickersley play down the right, it’s crossed in… Straight into the keeper’s grasp… But oh no! She’s dropped it and the players scramble for the ball… Worsbrough manage to clear for a corner… But the Referee has given a free kick to Worsbrough for a foul on the keeper in that scramble. At half time the score remains 1-1.

Second half, a slow start again by both sides… At least it’s not 0-0 though! 65 minutes on the clock and Worsbrough play it forward but Wickersley’s number 7 is there and lumps it forward straight towards the keeper… Wait a minute she’s struggling here… OH! It’s bounced in!!! Amazingly!! From the halfway line and a poorly dealt with ball sees Wickersley back in front! One word: “Fluke!” 1-2!

2 minutes later and can Worsbrough bounce back again? They play a through ball for number 10 to chase and out comes the keeper… Number 10 gets there first and plays it to number 15 who diverts it towards goal and it’s rolling in… But Wickersley get there and clear for a corner… So close! In comes the corner… Keeper gets a hand to it and… Wickersley clear!

72 minutes now and Wickersley play a ball out to the right for number 19, she gets to the by line and crosses in towards number 15 at the back stick… She can’t get there and it’s out for a goal kick…

Worsbrough are starting to chase the equaliser now in the closing stages but can they get it? 86th minute and number 16 drives forward for Worsbrough and she gets to the edge of the box, she goes for goal… It’s over the bar! Close! Worsbrough keep on coming… But the Referee blows for full time! Victory for Wickersley!

• Atmosphere: 1/10 – A few in attendance but no noise sadly.
• The Ground: 4/10 – It is a field in a park but I do love the backdrops on each side more than anything! It would be a good Hope Valley League ground I’d say!
• Expense: 10/10 – A free game means only one thing!
• Overall Experience: 6/10 – Great to see the Merry Miller and Ash again but it was a slow game which could have been better! Great to see a halfway line goal though!
