The Academy Ground, home of Barnsley Ladies FC based in South Yorkshire and play their trade in the North East Regional Women’s League Southern Division. Not to be confused with ‘Barnsley Women’ who I saw last season at Wombwell Town, this team is the one connected to Barnsley FC.
Situated just behind Oakwell, it is also the training ground for the first team and the home ground of the U21s. It’s the 3G pitch with the big main stand that will see Barnsley Ladies take on Sheffield Wednesday Ladies today, let’s have it!
Straight up the M1 and into Barnsley and into the ground with around 20 minutes till kick off. Free Entry here! Nice one! Ash is here and Ian has arrived too! A good catch up with them later and out come the teams, let’s play!
Kick Off! 5 minutes in and Barnsley play down the left, it’s played across to number 19 on the edge of the box to shoot first time… Wide!
11th minute and Barnsley play it through to number 19 who is away and has beaten the offside trap, she must score… She does! Barnsley lead! 1-0!
25th minute and Wednesday play down the right, it’s played across to number 7 just inside the box, she gets it onto her left foot for the shot… It’s off the bar! And played back to the keeper. So close!
28th minute and Barnsley come forward, it’s played to number 9 in the box to shoot… And she finds the bottom corner! Good finish! 2-0!
33 minutes now and Wednesday have a corner, in it comes… Keeper fumbles and it falls for number 6 to strike… Blocked! Barnsley had bodies behind the ball there!
2 minutes later and Barnsley play it forward looking for number 4, she holds off the defender and gets her shot away just inside the box from the left… BRILLIANT!! Right into the bottom corner! Barnsley have daylight! 3-0!
41 minutes on the watch and Barnsley win the ball back in the Wednesday half and play it through to number 21 who has beaten the offside trap and is in… OH! She’s somehow dragged it wide! That should be 4!
43 minutes gone and Barnsley come again, it’s played through to number 19 who’s in… Good save! Tipped wide by the keeper and it’s a corner, in comes the corner… Keeper misses it… It comes off a Wednesday player and the keeper collects. barnsley would have to settle for 3 at half time.
Second half, straight away and Barnsley play down the left, it’s crossed in, keeper parries it away but Barnsley get it back on the right, it’s played across and set up for number 21 running into the box… Who places it beautifully into the bottom corner! It is 4 now! 4-0!
54th minute and Barnsley play forward, it’s flicked forward to number 8 who’s in… It’s another one! Another finish! How many are Barnsley going to get here today? 5-0!
2 minutes later and here they come again, number 4 is played through and gets into the box on the left, she goes for the far corner… And she finds it!! Barnsley are on fire! 6-0!
62 minutes now and Barnsley play down the left, it’s played across the middle looking for number 8 at the back stick… It’s another goal! Are double figures on the cards here? 7-0!
75th minute and here come Wednesday down the left, they’ve got bodies in the box, it’s crossed in… Number 11 beats the keeper to it and gets the ball past her… And it’s bundled in by number 14! A small consolation for Wednesday! 7-1!
80th minute and Barnsley have it on the edge of the Wednesday box, it’s played to number 8 who flicks it brilliantly on to number 21 running in… She heads it past the keeper for 8! 8-1!
85 minutes gone and Barnsley have a corner, in it comes… Over everyone and it comes for number 6 who shoots from outside the box… Saved! Barnsley get it back and it’s played to number 8 on the right to cross… OH! It’s gone right in! All the way in! It’s 9!! 9-1!
2 minutes later and here come Barnsley again, number 8 is played through… Is this the double figures…? YES IT IS! She rolls it in! And Sheffield Wednesday Ladies have become the first team I’ve seen to score and concede double figures on 2 separate occasions… 10-1! That was enough for Barnsley!
