The Polegrove, home of Bexhill United based in Bexhill-On-Sea, East Sussex and play their trade in Step 5 of the Non League Pyramid in the Southern Combination Football League Premier Division. Nicknamed the “Pirates” which I assume is due to being so close to the South Coast Sea.

On a chilly afternoon on the south coast, Bexhill United and AFC Varndeanians faced off at The Polegrove in the Southern Combination League. After arriving just in time from Hooe FC’s game, I was greeted with a fast-paced start from the visitors.

AFC Varndeanians looked the more dangerous side in the opening exchanges and had a couple of half-chances to take the lead, pressing high and catching Bexhill on the back foot. Shay Tobin, the Varndeanians’ number 7—whom I previously met in Dublin at Bohemians vs St Patrick’s Athletic—was lively in midfield, trying to dictate play.
However, despite their strong start, the visitors failed to capitalise, and Bexhill United soon turned the game on its head. In a quickfire double, Bexhill struck twice in a matter of minutes, completely shifting the momentum in their favour. The first goal came from a well-worked move down the right, finished confidently by Aaron Capon, while the second followed shortly after a composed strike by Ash Latuske that left Varndeanians stunned.

Bexhill took full control of the match after that, playing with confidence and looking to extend their lead before halftime. However, Varndeanians managed to hold firm, going into the break 2-0 down but still in the contest.
Second half, it continues in much the same fashion, with Bexhill dictating play and limiting Varndeanians to very few chances. The visitors tried to push forward but struggled to break through a well-organised Bexhill defence.
Bexhill eventually sealed the victory with a third goal, a fantastic bullet header following a well-delivered set piece by Dan Rogers. From that moment on, it was a case of game management for the hosts, who saw out the remainder of the match comfortably to claim a well-earned three points.

After the full-time whistle, I had the opportunity to chat with Bexhill United manager Ryan and chairman Graham. They spoke about the club’s ambitions, the importance of consistency, and how performances like today’s can help them push forward in the league.

FT: Bexhill United 3-0 AFC Varndeanians
Ratings
- Atmosphere: 4/10 – A strong sense of community more than anything here today!
- The Ground: 7/10 – It’s all about the stand for me! One of the best I’ve seen despite it’s size, old school and bags of character. It is very open plan and I would love to see something on the other side if possible.
- Expense: 10/10 – Freebie!
- Overall Experience: 10/10 – Great to see Shay here today and to also interview the manager and chairman of Bexhill who were very welcoming. Great to see 3 goals here today and to tick off this ground and see off a great day at the South Coast!
