Beck Lane, home of Littletown FC based in West Yorkshire and play their trade in the Yorkshire Amateur League. A famous tick this ground! It started as a Rugby ground which was home of Heckmondwike Rugby Club. Huddersfield Town showed interest in this ground and in the end used it for the U18s team which once saw them face Manchester United U18s in front of 5,000 fans in 1958! Denis Law has also played on this ground once before in front of the late Sir Matt Busby who once attended this ground! All this was told to me by the club’s longest serving member who once played for the club named Derek! Thank you Derek!!!
This is a ground big on the hit list since lockdown’s easing but it sure is hard to get to on public transport… A train into Wakefield Westgate and now the 268 bus towards Bradford which goes through Dewsbury to Heckmondwike. Halfway through the journey and some familiar faces at the next bus stop. It’s Luke from last week at Robin Hood joined by Vaughany of YouTube’s Sunday Social joining me now on the top deck of the bus!! A great start to the day! Let’s hope the football is just the same!! Wortley are the visitors to Littletown today.
A quick trip to Morrisons to get some fuel for the game and off we go to the ground. Free Entry again for this Yorkshire Amateur game! HA! HAHA! HA! The Merry Miller has joined me now in good time! A competitive start to the game by both sides here!
7 minutes in and Littletown come forward, number 9 receives the ball on the edge of the box, he turns and makes space for the shot… And he finds the net!!! 1-0!! Great finish and a great start to the game!!
1 minute later and Wortley have a free kick in the Littletown half, the ball is played into the box, a bit of pinball and it falls to number 4!! Over the bar! 15 minutes into the game now and Littletown play forward now, number 7 plays a 1-2 and he’s in… Scuffs it and the keeper saves and it’s out for a corner, he should have done better there… Corner, in it comes… Half cleared by Wortley and number 11 gets it on the edge of the box, he goes for goal… Number 9 is there… GOAL!! 2-0! Number 11’s shot was going wide but number 9 was there to put it in! Wortley contest the offside but the goal stands!!
It’s an even game here with both teams enjoying spells of possession. 26 minutes gone and Wortley come forward, they lose the ball and Littletown clear, number 9 picks it up and drives forward towards the Wortley penalty box, he’s on the edge and he shoots… WHAT A FINISH!!! Better than the first goal! He goes for the far post and hits the far post and finds the net! Hat-trick hero!!
33 minutes gone now and Littletown come forward again, number 7 comes down the right, he pulls it back to number 9… Good save onto the post! It’s not done yet, here’s number 10 on the edge of the box, he curls it… Good save again!! The keeper tips it onto the bar onto Wortley’s number 4… It rolls just wide… So close to being an own goal after some great goalkeeping there from the Wortley number 1! The corner comes in, cleared.
40 minutes on the clock and Wortley come forward now, a long ball is played to number 9 who’s in… And he scores!!! 3-1! Good finish! No more chances in this half and the score remained 3-1!
Second half, both teams having a fair share of possession here with little conviction. 56 minutes gone now and Wortley have the ball on the right, a ball played to the edge of the box, number 5 is there… HE HITS THE BAR… And here’s number 10 for the rebound… He’s blazed it over… What a miss!! Even I’d be proud of that… Should be 3-2!
3 minutes later and Wortley have a corner, driven low towards the edge of the box, it’s played across goal… AND IN!!! Number 4 at the back post to head home and it is 3-2 now!!! Game on!! Could this be Little Istanbul?
65 minutes on the clock now and Wortley come forward, the ball is played to number 9 on the edge of the box, he shoots on the turn… Just wide! So close! Wortley are trying here for the equaliser but will they get it? 78 minutes gone and here they come again! They lose the ball and Littletown play it forward to number 9 who’s’ got the freedom of Yorkshire here, he bares down on goal… And finishes!!! 4-2! The Wortley keeper is not happy! He thinks it was offside, he was clearly onside from the view I had!
Wortley continuing to come forward but would they cause any trouble to the Littletown defence? 90 minutes past and Wortley lose the ball in the Littletown half and they play it forward to number 7 and he’s through… He’s put it wide… Big chance to seal the deal there! That would be the last action and the Referee blows the final whistle! And now time for me and the Merry Miller to make our tracks home!
FT: Littletown 4-2 Wortley
