Mosborough Miners Welfare, home of Mosborough FC and the Ladies team and are based South East of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The Ladies team being covered by me today who compete in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Open Age Division Two. It’s Mosborough’s last home game of 2021 as they face Swallownest FC Ladies, will it be a happy one?
The short journey for me from Shirebrook to Mosborough and here I am! Free Entry here! Fab! Thankfully no fog on the pitch at the moment, but it is on the far side in the distance, let’s hope it doesn’t venture over here.
Kick Off! A slow start to the game with both teams getting to grips with the conditions and they are both enjoying spells of possession but Swallownest looking just the stronger of the 2 teams so far.
16 minutes in and Swallownest have a corner, in it comes… It’s a great delivery and here’s number 12 for Swallownest at point blank to give them the lead… No! She’s put it wide… Harder to miss but it’s happened! Sitter! 25 minutes now and Swallownest play a ball over the top for number 10 to run onto, she plays it across looking for number 12 but Mosborough intercept and it’s loose, Swallownest’s number 7 gets to it and goes for goal first time from 30 yards… OH! Just wide! Nearly crept into the far corner there.
Swallownest growing a lot more confident in this game now and are taking the game to Mosborough. 40th minute and the Swallownest keeper clears it but only to Mosborough’s number 11 and she goes for goal from way out… It rolls and rolls… Just wide! 43rd minute now and Swallownest have it on the right, it’s crossed in, headed away and it comes to Swallownest’s number 9 who hooks it to number 10, she plays it to number 7 who gets into the box and gets a sight of goal, she shoots… Keeper tips it away from number 12 who runs in at the far post and Mosborough clear. 0-0 at half time here… Not 2 weeks in a row surely…
Second half, 47 minutes on the watch, Mosborough have a free kick on the halfway line, it’s lumped forward, flicked on to number 12 who brings it down, she puts it onto her right foot and goes for the far corner… But puts it wide.
51st minute and Swallownest win the ball back from the Mosborough keeper’s kick, it’s worked forward and number 9 is played through in the box… And Swallownest have a deserved lead!!!! She rolls it in!! 0-1! Straight from kick off and Swallownest are straight out of the blocks… A mix up at the back as the ball is played back to the keeper but it’s gone astray and Swallownest charge for it… Mosborough get back to stop them and concede a corner in the process, incomes the corner… Swallownest win the header… It’s turned in by number 21!!! 2 in the blink of an eye!! But you have to say they have deserved it!! 0-2!!
65 minutes now and Swallownest come down the right wing, crossed in towards number 10… She’s decided not to head it and she brings it down and shoots… Straight at the keeper but she gets it back, she plays it to number 21… She scuffs it straight into the keeper’s grasp.
76 minutes on the clock and Mosborough win the ball back in midfield, they play it forward for number 5 to run onto, she goes for goal early… Keeper gets a hand to it… But it’s rolled in!! Surprised she went for it early with space in front of her but she gets the goal and can Mosborough mount a fightback now? 1-2!
1 minute later and Swallownest play the ball to number 10, she drives forward and beats her defender to get into the box… She shoots wide… Big chance! 82 minutes and Swallownest have a corner, in it comes… A free header for number 7 on the 6 yard line… She’s put it wide… Swallownest are missing chances to put the game to bed here…
85th minute and Swallownest have a free kick on the edge of the box on the left side, number 7 steps up… She’s hit the wall but it comes to number 18 and she shoots… It’s over! Are Swallownest going to regret these chances?
2 minutes later and Swallownest have another free kick in a similar position but on the right hand side this time, number 7 takes again… She scores this time!!! 1-3!! That should be that!!
Into stoppage time and Mosborough come forward, they play it into the box… Swallownest get there but was it controlled with a hand? “Yes!” Says the Referee and it’s a Penalty to Mosborough! Have they got time to get back into this game? Number 8 to take… Oh no! She’s put it wide… It’s been a weekend of missed penalties for me! The resulting goal kick is taken and the Referee blows the final whistle! Swallownest too strong for Mosborough today!

- Atmosphere: 2/10 – A couple of “Come on Mosboroughs” and “Come on Swallownests” from the few people in attendance today so I’ll give them an extra point for that!
- The Ground: 1/10 – Not a fan of this ground unfortunately… The banking causing many problems when the ball went out on that side and it is just a field with no stands…
- Expense: 10/10 – A free game is always a 10!!
- Overall Experience: 7/10 – A good game all in all! Plenty of chances and plenty of goals! It was worth standing in the cold for I’d say!
