Berry Brow Recreation Ground, home of Berry Brow AFC based in West Yorkshire and compete in the Huddersfield & District Football League. My first ground in this league and this one is a personal recommendation from Mr Graham Kenworthy himself! Which can only mean one thing!! The Merry Miller has been visiting a few of them recently and the verdict is good so far! This could be the first of many visits in this league!
But first, a work meeting for me and the Merry Miller and then off to Frecheville Sports Club for Birley FC vs Royal Oak FC in the Sheffield Imperial Sunday League… But with time not on our side here, Plan B is needed! After little deliberation, Scissett United vs Wooldale Wanderers in the cup is the chosen game and off we go!
6:05pm and here we are… And the gate is shut with no one here… Oh no!! Now what do we do…? Berry Brow are at home… We aren’t losing out now! To Berry Brow we go! Here we are at last! It is the Reserves who are playing Britannia Sports Reserves here tonight. About 20 minutes in here… Let’s find out the score, fingers crossed it’s still 0-0… It’s currently 2-1 to Berry Brow… Damn it!! Ah well it happens to us all… I hope my groundhopper friends can forgive me!
Both teams having a fair share of the ball from what I’ve seen so far in the game. 33rd minute and Britannia’s number 3 finds himself through in the box to the left, he goes for goal… Keeper gets a foot to it but it’s gone up in the air and going in… The keeper gets up and parries it away.
40 minutes now and Berry Brow play a ball out wide to the right for number 10, he plays it across low… Britannia’s number 4 clears it over his own bar… That was close! It is a corner, it could’ve been a lot worse… In comes the corner… Number 6 with the header… Over! Still 2-1 at half time and the Referee comes over to collect the ball. “You’re that blogger guy!” Even the Referee here knows what I do now! Am I famous yet!!? Fantastic! 2 Penalties in this game with one of them missed… Damn it!!!
Second half, 50th minute and Berry Brow in possession now, a ball played forward towards number 9 running in, the keeper comes for it… Number 9 gets there first and he’s got the goal at his mercy… He rolls it in!! 3-1 to Berry Brow!!
56 minutes on the clock and Britannia hit the ball forward, it’s flicked on to number 7 and he goes for goal from the edge of the box… Straight at the keeper! 63 minutes gone and Britannia win a free kick on the left wing outside the box, number 4 steps up, he goes for goal… And he finds it!!! The keeper couldn’t keep it out and it’s game on here!! 3-2!!
The game goes on… “Why are they playing…? They’ve got nothing to play for!” The Britannia keeper mentioning to us as we walk around the pitch! Proper non league right there!! Can Britannia get themselves back into this game here? 76th minute and Berry Brow play down the right wing, it’s played across low and number 4 is there at the back stick… It’s in off the post!! 4-2!! Literally minutes after the keeper spoke to us…
83 minutes on the clock and Berry Brow have a corner, in it comes… headed down towards number 11 who controls… And he bundles it in!!! 5-2!! That should be the game for Berry Brow right there!!!
4 minutes later and Berry Brow come again, the ball is played through to number 4 in the box, he shoots… It’s another one!! Berry Brow upping their goal difference in the closing stages of this game here!! 6-2!!
Into the 90th minute and Berry Brow have a free kick around 30 yards out by my estimations, number 4 steps up… OH! That’s brilliant!! Just like Ronaldo that one!! Over the wall and in and the keeper didn’t move a muscle!! The Referee blows for full time straight after the ball hit the back of the net!! 7-2!!

- The Ground: 6.5/10 – Graham Kenworthy wasn’t wrong!!! A beautiful ground they have here!! Lovely views all around especially of the houses on the one side!! I’m looking forward to seeing more in this league after this one!!
- Expense: 10/10 – A free game!!
- Overall Experience: 8.5/10 – I really enjoyed tonight!! Saw plenty of goals despite the early stages miss but a great ground and great to be recognised once again!! I’ll be back to see the Huddersfield & District League again soon!!
