The DSM Memorial Ground, home of Penistone Church based in South Yorkshire. The lockdown is easing and I am stepping it up now from step 7 and below right up to step 5!! As Penistone are at home to Wakefield AFC in the Yorkshire Trophy, a new competition for teams in the Yorkshire area for teams that have had their seasons curtailed.
Arrival in Penistone in plenty of time, a lovely little town at first glance I must say, but now time for a quick pit stop!
Pit stop over and now off to the ground, arrival just before the 6pm opening time… AND THEY’VE ONLY GONE AND LET ME IN FOR FREE!!!!!!!! How about that!! Just because I got here early enough!! Free Entry to this Yorkshire Trophy tie! You beautiful people!! Ben the Blade and the guys I met at North Gawber have also joined me now just in time for the game!
Kick Off! 5 minutes in and Bruno Bagi has the ball for Wakefield on the right, he crosses in… Headed out for a corner, in comes the corner, the header at goal… Good save by the keeper and Penistone play away.
Both teams having a fair share of possession here but no team can seem to find a breakthrough as of yet. 23 minutes on the watch, Jed Wilkinson has the ball on the right for Wakefield, he crosses in… He’s hit the bar from the cross!! Penistone head over their own bar for a corner, Wakefield play short, Harley Blankley has it in space on the edge of the box, he shoots… Over! Goal kick.
Half an hour gone and Penistone have a free kick on the halfway line, played into the box, headed away by Wakefield, Tom Charlesworth picks it up and plays it forward to Nicky Guest who lays it off to Kurtis Turner on the edge who shoots… The keeper has spilled it and here’s Kieran Ryan… OH HE’S MISSED… But no he’s offside it wouldn’t have counted… But he should’ve scored nonetheless!
35 minutes gone now and Penistone play a long ball forward, the ball is flicked on to Nicky Guest… Down he goes… The Referee has given the Penalty!! Clumsy from Corey Woodward… I thought it was a Penalty! Kieran Ryan steps up… AND SCORES!!! 1-0!!
2 minutes later and can Wakefield respond? The ball is played forward, cushioned down and played to Harley Blankley around 25 yards out, he goes for it… AND SCORES!!! WHAT A HIT!!! They have responded!!! 1-1! Game on!! 2 minutes after that and Penistone come forward now, Jordan Coduri has it and drives forward, he plays a 1-2 and shoots inside the box… IT’S IN!!! 3 Goals in 4 minutes here!!! And it’s 2-1 to Penistone!! This game has exploded into life!!!
40 minutes on the clock now and Penistone come forward again, a long ball played to the left wing is brought down and played to Nicky Guest in the box… OFF THE BAR!!! Goal kick! The game slowed down for a short period and the score at half time remained 1-1.
Second half, a very solid start to the half from both teams with no real chances and both teams defending and competing well. 62 minutes now and a long ball to the right is played by Penistone, Nicky Guest gets onto it and plays it across goal… Here’s Callum Lee!! Good save by the keeper but it’s not gone yet… Has now, headed out for a corner, in it comes, KIERAN RYAN!!! Wide… Goal kick.
2 minutes later and Penistone have a throw in on the left in Wakefield’s half, the ball is flicked on to Nicky Guest on the edge of the box, he shoots… OH IT’S IN!! The keeper makes a mess of it and it’s 3-1!!
68 minutes gone now and Penistone win a free kick, taken quickly to Tom Charlesworth who plays it in low… The Wakefield defence miss it and… Callum Lee has skied it… Should have scored easy there…
1 minute later and they come forward again and win a free kick on the left near the corner flag, Kurtis Turner crosses, the Wakefield keeper misses it… Kieran Ryan!!! 4-1!! He heads home and that should be 3 points for Penistone!
77 minutes gone and Penistone play forward again, a chipped through ball into the box, Nicky Guest chests it… AND WHAT A FINISH!!!! HOW ABOUT THAT!!! A goal that any striker would be proud of and that is 5 to Penistone!!!
The game has fizzled out and it looks like that could be that for the goals now. 87 minutes on the clock and Penistone come again, a long ball is played into the box and Jordan Coduri is there… He’s headed over… Should be 6! It wouldn’t end up being 6 and the score finished 5-1.

- Atmosphere: 2.5/10 – A friendly crowd they have here to say the least but not any chants or singing sadly.
- The Ground: 8/10 – A great ground for this level! A lovely stand with a decent picturesque view!!
- Expense: 10/10 – They let me in for free to see 6 goals!!! I should be giving them 11!!
- Overall Experience: 8.5/10 – Another great day! Seeing Ben the blade and other groundhopper friends certainly added to it along with the friendliness of the club!!
