Norwood Recreation Ground, home of Beverley Town based in the East Riding of Yorkshire and compete in Step 6 of the Non League Pyramid in the Northern Counties East League Division One.
It’s another brand new addition to Step 6! After a number of years in the Humber Premier League and being in and around the top of that league, they are finally here in the big time! They made a good start but have since slowly started to fall down the table but today they face Athersley Recreation who themselves are in the lower end of the table. What will this bring? I will be joined by Ben today and we will be vlogging on the FANA Fan Podcast!
To the M18 and to the M62 and past Beverley racecourse and into the ground. £3.50 for this NCEL tie! Smashing! £3.50 for a pin badge as well. A very warm welcome from the staff here at Beverley today! A very artistic food van just outside the clubhouse here, let’s try it! A hot dog and chips… OH MY WORD!! That is delicious! The 2nd best food I’ve ever had at a football ground! Not quite as good as Avro… It’s finished Sunderland 3-0 Millwall in the early kick off but now it’s time for the main event.
Ben is here at last! Quite a few more fans have turned up here today as well which is good to see! Out come the teams! It’s Beverley Town vs Athersley Rec AANNNNNNND IT’S COLD…
Kick Off! 9 minutes in and Athersley play down the right, it’s crossed in and Lee Garside wins the header… Over! The rain is pouring down now… Take cover! Some are even heading back to the clubhouse…
18th minute and Athersley play down the right again, it’s played into the box early towards Cole Edwards who goes for the volley… Just wide! What a goal that would have been!
25 minutes on the clock and Beverley have a free kick in a shooting position from around 25 yards out, Craig Muirhead steps up… Over!
2 minutes later and Athersley play a long ball forward… But the keeper is there to clear… But only to Lee Garside who goes for goal from just outside the centre circle…… He’s done it!! Over the keeper and in!! Still some goal to score from there! Athersley lead here! 0-1!
1 minute later and Athersley play a ball over the top again and Ethan Nixon is in here, he goes for the lob… HE’S GOT IT! IT’S TWO!!!! Just like that and Athersley have some daylight! 0-2!
What can Beverley do about this…? 36th minute and Beverley have a free kick on the right, it’s played into the box… It’s headed up in the air… James Piercy goes for the over head kick… Wide! He just didn’t quite connect with it properly…
41 minutes now and Beverley have a free kick on the left hand side, it’s played into the middle, it’s headed up in the air again… It falls for James Piercy who goes for the volley… OH! Just wide! So close!
43rd minute and Athersley come forward down the right, Ethan Nixon plays it inside and it’s played over the top for Connor Pachett who goes for the volley… That is fantastic! But the flag is up… He was Offside and it won’t count but that was a great finish! A spirited beverley fightback sees them not score before half time with the score at 0-2. Story of their season according to some…
Second half, 47 minutes played and Beverley play down the right, it’s played to Craig Muirhead who shoots inside the box… Oooooh! It’s just over, that was a big opportunity there but a good start to the second half from Beverley.
55 minutes on the clock and Beverley hit it forward, It’s flicked on and flicked on again to Scott Phillips running in, down he goes… Penalty! Good decision from the Referee there for me! Reece Moody steps up, can he get Beverley back into the game… NO! It’s tipped onto the bar… And the keeper claims it! What a save! Beverley can’t quite get themselves back into it here…
2 minutes later and Beverley hit it long and Reece Moody is away, out comes the keeper and Moody gets there first for the lob… Keeper gets a hand to it and he takes out Moody in the follow through… That has to be! “No!” Says the Referee… That’s a Penalty for me!
61 minutes gone and Beverley play forward down the right, it’s played to Scott Phillips on the right who plays it across low and Craig Muirhead slides for it… OH! He doesn’t get enough on it and it rolls wide… Big chances here for Beverley!
75th minute and Beverley play down the right again, it’s played across low and Reece Moody is running in… He smashes it home!! Beverley are back in it here! But there’s a scrap in the goalmouth as Beverley try to get the ball back… No cards given and Beverley are back in it and what a last 15 minutes we’ve got here now! 1-2!
1 minute later and Beverley play a long ball forward, Chris Adams chases it but the keeper claims it… Wait a minute he’s kicked out at Adams there… Tempers are boiling over here! The Referee has given 2 yellow cards for the melee and nothing for the keeper, lucky!
Beverley are hounding the Athersley backline as the game draws to a close, can they find the equaliser? Into the 90th minute and Beverley have a free kick on the halfway line, the keeper takes and lumps it forward, it’s flicked on to Scott Phillips who chests it down and shoots… HE’S DONE IT!!! BEVERLEY ARE LEVEL AT THE DEATH!!!! A very deserved goal to say the least! They’ve pressed and pressed and got their reward! 2-2!
Stoppage time rolls on and here come Athersley with Ethan Nixon, he drives forward and he gets into the box and he gets a shot away… Surely not… OH! Straight at the keeper… What a goal that would have been!
The game carries on and Beverley hit it long… Referee gives a free kick on the edge of the box for beverley for a foul on Scott Phillips… Big chance for Beverley here! Robbie Start will take… Ooooh! It’s just over! Close! Play goes on… And it will finish all square! What a second half that was!

- Atmosphere: 2/10 – A few cheers here and there but nothing spectacular.
- The Ground: 5/10 – It is a basic setup which I am sure will only get better!
- Expense: 10/10 – £3.50 to get in, £3.50 for a pin badge and then food and drink, definitely worth it!
- Overall Experience: 10/10 – A very friendly club with a bit of drama at the end! Great to see Ben as well! Can’t knock that!
