The Glebe Sports Ground, home of Whickham FC based in Tyne & Wear and play their trade in Step 5 of the Non League pyramid in the Northern League Division One. Nicknamed the “Lang Jacks” which is a very unusual nickname for a club! I wonder what the origins of that are?
My first ground in Tyne & Wear and it’s a part of the country I haven’t visited for football very often so this will hopefully be the start of something new! Whickham vs Newcastle Benfield! Up the M1 onto the A1 and here we are!
£7 to get in here! Nice! A quick drink in the bar and a chat with fellow groundhopper Clive and it’s time for the football! A combination of being up north and up on a hill is certainly going to make for a cold cold night… Let’s hope the teams run their socks off and give us a good game here tonight!
Kick Off! “Ally Ally Ally Oh! Whickham FC!” They have a drum as well!
16 minutes in and a long ball is played forward by Whickham and it’s played just right and they’re in and out comes the keeper… It’s played across the middle and… It’s gone in!! The Whickham man slides in and gets that vital touch and Whickham lead here! 1-0!
25 minutes now and here come Whickham again down the right, it’s crossed in, Benfield clear but Whickham gets it back on the left and it’s crossed again, headed away but Whickham get it back again, he makes space for the shot… AND HE SCORES!!! Brilliant finish! The keeper didn’t see that in time and it’s 2-0!
Benfield put on some late pressure in this first half but at half time the score remains 2-0.
Second half, evenly matched so far but no real action to report.
65 minutes now and here come Whickham again in behind the defence and into the box… Shot saved but he’s got it back and plays it across… There’s the third!! he couldn’t miss and that surely is the game now for Whickham! 3-0!
A very poor second half with little to shout about ends 3-0 to Whickham.

- Atmosphere: 3/10 – It could’ve been better!
- The Ground: 4/10 – Very basic! The stand is really good and so is the bar! Not the biggest fan of grounds that share with Cricket clubs or pitches on a slope though…
- Expense: 10/10 – £7 is good for me!
- Overall Experience: 6/10 – Great to see Clive and others here tonight and I’m glad to finally be off the mark in Tyne & Wear!
