Brumby Hall Sports Ground, home of Appleby Frodingham based in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire and play their trade in the Lincolnshire League. Nicknamed the “Steelmen” after the club’s previous association with the town’s steel company.
A former Step 6 club that I have once seen Shirebrook play. The club has a proud record of the biggest win in the league’s history in the Central Midlands League! Not 10-0, not 15-0, not even 20-0! 23-0!! How about that!?
Tonight it’s a Lincolnshire League tie against Crowle Colts who sit in fourth place whereas Appleby sit second bottom…? Place your bets gentleman! Onto the M18, to the M180 and onto the M181 and… Scunthorpe vs Wrexham…? Appleby for the win and here I am! £3 to get in here! Spectacularrrrrr! Out come the teams after their warm ups and you certainly can hear Glanford Park from here!
Kick Off! 2 minutes in and it’s a corner for Crowle, in it comes… The header… Off the bar… It falls to number 8… Appleby get there and clear.
A slow start to the game here so far and I have to say it looks like a very young Appleby team here tonight. Crowle come forward, it’s played to number 11 who shoots from just outside the box… Just over!
Great to meet the club’s honorary president, Glen Jackson! Some great stories to tell of the club who he would like to see in the NCEL once again one day. “This is where young players start and thrive!” A shame that the club can’t keep a hold of those young players…
27 minutes now and Appleby play the ball through to number 11 on the left, he gets into the box and he shoots… Keeper tips it wide, corner, in it comes… Deflected out for another, in it comes again… Cleared by Crowle.
34th minute now and Appleby lump it forward, it’s headed across, it comes for number 11 to shoot… Keeper saves!
1 minute later and Appleby play down the left with number 9, he gets a cross in, it comes for number 10 on the volley… YES! He scores!! Appleby have the lead here!! 1-0!
1 minute later again and Appleby bomb down the left again with number 9 played through, he plays it across to number 10… And he’s missed! How on earth has he put that wide…? Golden chance for 2 there!
43 minutes on the clock and Crowle come forward down the right, number 10 gets into the box, beats his man and plays it across… It’s blocked but comes back to him… To smash home!! Crowle are level! 1-1! It remains 1-1 at half time.
Second half, 46th minute and Crowle play the ball forward for number 10 on the right, he gets into the box and he’s in… And he’s scored!! Straight out of the blocks! Good finish! 1-2!
53rd minute and it’s a corner for Crowle, in it comes… It’s headed on… That’s a foul! Penalty! For certain! Number 10 to take… And he rolls it in! 1-3!
2 minutes later and Crowle play down the right, it’s whipped in, it’s flicked on and number 9 beats the keeper to it… And he scores! 1-4! Crowle are running away with this and this young Appleby side have no answer…
70 minutes now and Crowle have it on the left, it’s worked across to number 8 who shoots from 20 yards… Just wide!
78th minute and it’s a corner for Crowle, it’s played short, played back to be crossed, it’s come off number 5 for Appleby… And it’s rolled in… Own goal! 1-5! Isn’t that the story of Appleby’s night…
87 minutes gone and Crowle play forward again, ball over the top for number 12 to chase, he slides for it and gets it… But the Referee has given a foul on the keeper, no goal!
1 minute later and Appleby hit the ball forward, number 9 holds off his man and gets a shot away… Good save!
90th minute now and Appleby have it at the back, it’s played across to number 5 who hasn’t dealt with it and… Number 12 has a tap in! 1-6! Too easy!
90+2 on my watch and Crowle play in number 12, keeper comes and he shoots… No… Just wide! Should have been 7!
90+3 now and it’s a free kick on the right for Appleby, it’s played in, number 5 is there for crowle and he’s sliced it… OH! It’s gone in off the post! What an own goal that is!! 2-6! A consolation for Appleby.
90+5 I think now and the game goes on, Crowle play down the left, number 3 crosses, number 15 is there at the back post and he gets it across to 16… who finishes! 2-7! It’s raining goals here in stoppage time!! The Referee does now blow for full time!

- Atmosphere: 1/10 – I was impressed with how many people were here tonight with Scunthorpe being at home but sadly it was deafly silent…
- The Ground: 6.5/10 – I like this ground! It’s definitely good enough for the NCEL in my opinion! Great bar!! Good little stand and it’s well laid out on the bar side.
- Expense: 10/10 – £3!!
- Overall Experience: 9/10 – Enjoyed it tonight! Lots of goals but more importantly great to meet Glen here tonight!
