Caribbean Sports

Caribbean Sports Club, home of Caribbean Sports based in Ecclesfield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire and play their trade in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Division One. The season is drawing to a close… But the County Senior games are going midweek again and me and the Merry Miller have got grounds to visit! One that has been on our lists for a while: Caribbean Sports!! And tonight they face Wombwell Main Reserves! Let’s go!

The journey across from Hoyland to Wombwell to fetch the Merry Miller and now we move to Ecclesfield! 10 minutes to go before kick off and here we are! Free Entry to this ground! Buzzing! I certainly hope it’s as nice as the Caribbean here!! I certainly do wonder where this club gets it’s name from. A game on next door at the Civil Service ground… I can get 2 ticks in one night here… But no! I am here for the Caribbean Sports Club tonight! The Civil Service ground will be coming soon…

Kick Off! 3 minutes in and Caribbean play down the left, they get in a low cross… It falls to number 2 on the edge of the box to strike first time… Just wide!! Nearly arrowed into the top corner there. Great to have a little chat to the Wombwell manager and get the insights of the club on the way around! There is nothing like grassroots football!!

13th minute and Wombwell play a long ball forward towards number 11 and he gets it and he’s free here… He gets into the box and shoots… And he finishes!! Goal! Just like that! 0-1!! 1 minute later and Wombwell play a long ball forward again towards number 11 and he’s in again… HE’S SCORED AGAIN!!! He’s on fire!! A fairly even game so far but 2 long balls splitting the Caribbean defence open sees them 2 goals down in the blink of an eye… 0-2!

Still a fairly even game here with both teams getting into the final third. 33rd minute and Wombwell have a free kick in the Caribbean half, it’s played to number 8 down the left, he beats his man… He gets past another and gets his shot away… Saved! He gets it back… Down he goes… The Referee waves it away… I thought that was a Penalty in all fairness! Caribbean clear the danger.

36 minutes on the clock and Wombwell play a ball forward to number 4 who makes his way through, he gets into the box… He’s hacked down there! Penalty!! As stone wall as they come! Number 4 will step up… And he’ll score!! Sends the keeper the wrong way! Wombwell have daylight! 0-3!

2 minutes later and Caribbean have it in the Wombwell half, number 15 has it and he goes for goal with the outside of his foot from around 30 yards… He’s hit the bar! But here comes number 14 running in for the rebound… Saved! Somehow his header is saved and Wombwell survive! Unlucky for Caribbean there!

Right on half time and Caribbean play forward, a good passing move sees number 5 through in the box on the right, he plays it across… It’s forced in!! An own goal by Wombwell’s number 6 who slid in to stop the cross… Couldn’t steer the ball away from goal and Caribbean are back in it! 1-3! That would be the last action of the first half.

Second half, 50 minutes gone and Caribbean come forward, it’s played to number 12 in the box, he makes space and shoots… It’s over! He should’ve done better there! 1 minute later and Wombwell play a ball forward, number 11 gets onto it and he drives into the box on the right, he goes for the far corner… And he does complete his hat-trick!! What a night he is having! Great finish!! 1-4!!

60 minutes now and Wombwell play a ball forward for number 10 running in with plenty of space, keeper comes and number 10 goes for the lob… Keeper saves! Not high enough! 2 minutes later and Wombwell have a goal kick which is hit long, it’s flicked on to number 11 on the left just outside the box, the keeper is off his line and number 11 goes for goal… And he finds it!!! His best goal of the night!!! Brilliant strike! 1-5!! Surely this game is beyond Caribbean now!

Caribbean looking good going forward but very unorganised at the back with plenty of space for Wombwell down the middle. Wombwell looking organised and have been more clinical in front of goal on the night! 71 minutes on the clock and Wombwell play a ball through to number 10 who’s through on goal here, he gets to the edge of the box with the keeper committed… Shot saved! He should’ve gone around him!

77 minutes now and a careless challenge in the Wombwell half by Caribbean sees tempers flaring here! The Referee has got to stop this… It has calmed down now but what is the fate…? Wombwell’s number 6 and Caribbean’s number 4 are sent off!! It’s 10 vs 10 for the remainder.

Into the last 10 minutes and Wombwell’s number 11 has gone off with an injury seeing them down to 9… Can Caribbean nick a goal here? 88th minute and Wombwell’s number 11 is back on the pitch and he’s got it down the left, he gets into the box and shoots… Good save! Corner, in it comes… Cleared by Caribbean! A few minutes later and the Referee blows for full time! A good win for Wombwell!

Now to take the Merry Miller home… Or maybe not! A trip to the Glasshouse in Wath-Upon-Dearne for an evening meal… On quiz night!!! Let’s go! Did we win…… No… Maybe next time!

• Atmosphere: 1/10 – Dead sadly.
• The Ground: 5/10 – I quite like this ground!! It’s got a little stand with rollers in it with a banking behind the nearest goal making for a good vantage point! Very picturesque as well with a great view of Keppel’s Column and also a good view from behind the far goal too!
• Expense: 10/10 – Free!!
• Overall Experience: 8/10 – A good game and a good evening out with the Merry Miller as always! Let’s get better at General Knowledge next time!!
