Fir Vale Sports Centre, Owler Lane, home of Sheffield Town based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and play their trade in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Premier Division. Quite a few teams with the name “Sheffield” in it now but this team is a recently formed team working there way up slowly.
The County Senior League games are coming in midweek now the clocks have gone forward and we start with Sheffield Town against High Green Villa! My second visit to this ground after the first one being an U21s game against Shirebrook Town U21s resulting in a 3-3 draw going into extra time only for the floodlights to go out and the game being abandoned… Let’s hope it doesn’t happen again tonight! The short 4 mile journey sees me here with 5 minutes to go to kick off! Free entry for this one! Buzzing!
Kick Off! 6 minutes in and Sheffield play down the left, it’s crossed in, number 11 goes for the overhead kick… OH! Just wide! What a goal that could have been!! 10 minutes now and Sheffield have made a bright start here so far! A ball is played through and the keeper comes out with players chasing the loose ball… Keeper gets there but it’s fallen to Sheffield’s number 16… He squares it to number 4 who takes a touch, he shoots… Blocked and out for a corner, in it comes… Cleared.
2 minutes later and High Green come forward down the left, it’s crossed in, number 9 is there at the far post… He’s put it over… He should’ve done better there! 15 minutes on the clock and Sheffield have a free kick from around 30 yards out, number 12 steps up… Good save! Sheffield chase the loose ball and win a corner, it’s played short to number 13, he beats 1, he beats 2 and he gets his shot away… Just clips the top of the bar! So close!
18th minute and High Green hit the ball long, Sheffield’s number 5 and High Green’s number 10 chases it with the keeper charging out… Number 10 gets there first and the keeper clatters into his own man and High Green are going to score… Yep! It’s bounced in! Against the run of play and High Green have the lead here! 0-1!!
26 minutes gone and High Green play a long ball again, number 10 chases and he’s onside from being in his own half when it was played, the keeper charges all the way to the centre circle… He’s brought him down there… Referee says he got the ball… He certainly didn’t for me there! That was a foul! High Green furious! I would be too!
31 minutes now and High Green play forward down the right with number 9, he gets into the box and he plays it across low for number 10 sliding in… He gets there and he finds the net!! High Green double their lead!! Sheffield shell shocked! 0-2!!
40 minutes now and Sheffield’s number 11 wins the ball back in midfield and he cuts inside from the left, 30 yards out and he goes for goal…… OH! Just just wide!! What a goal that would have been! A great start from Sheffield sees them 2 down at the break.
Second half, Sheffield straight out of the blocks, it’s a good move and here is number 9 in the box on the right… He’s Offside! He finishes but it won’t count! 49 minutes on the clock and Sheffield have the ball at the back and they hit it forward, High Green win the header and it comes to number 8 on the edge of the box for the volley… Tipped onto the bar brilliantly by the keeper!! Sheffield clear the resulting danger.
53rd minute and Sheffield play down the right wing with number 2, it’s crossed in towards number 4 at the back stick… He scores!! Game on!!! 1-2!! The High Green keeper holding onto the ball for dear life as the Sheffield players wrestle for it back… The Referee breaks it up and play will continue.
It’s becoming a difficult game for the officials tonight… High Green players rambling on at the Referee as the game goes on. 64th minute and the Referee goes over to the High Green bench to have words with the High Green manager… No cards given this time. Will that be the end of the protests?
It’s a competitive game for certain with Sheffield not showing the flair they started the first half with sadly for them. High Green still looking dangerous in the final third. 80th minute and High Green have a free kick around 30 yards out, number 8 steps up, he goes for the curler… Off the bar… Off the keeper… And in!!! 1-3!! That should be the points for High Green now!
Into the 90th minute and High Green break forward, it’s played to number 6 running in, he beats the defender… And finishes!! Game over now!! 1-4!! A great day for High Green Villa in the end!

- The Ground: 2.5/10 – It is a cage which is a pet hate of mine but it’s a decent one with good views around it especially with the Church in the background from one side!
- Expense: 10/10 – A free game means only one thing!
- Overall Experience: 7/10 – A good game in the end and I’m glad I’ve ticked this one off!
