Club Thorne Colliery

Welfare Ground, Moorends, home of Thorne Colliery now known as Club Thorne Colliery and are based in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Thorne play their trade in the Central Midlands League. The games sure are piling up!! Another Friday another match! This time Thorne is the destination who play host to Glasshoughton Welfare.

The bus to Doncaster from Barnsley and then the bus to Moorends. I have landed at the ground 15 minutes before kick off… And don’t have any cash on me… They don’t take card as you have probably guessed… So it looks like I’m going to miss the first few minutes of the game on the quest for cash… My good friend Chris has spotted me and believe it or not, the Chairman has only gone and let me in for free!! If Simon Wilson was a groundhopper… How’s your luck? So… Free Entry for this match! Rule #1 Always bring cash to non-league!!

Chris is here! Joe from Match Days is here! And for the first time, Dan Bell from Episode 2 of Season 2 of the FANA Fan is here!! Great to finally meet him!!

Kick Off! Thorne are straight out of the blocks, they charge down the right hand side, crossed in low and number 9 slides in… OH! He’s hit the post!! What a start that would have been… And if it wasn’t for Mark the chairman, I would have! 3 minutes in now and Thorne play a long ball forward, number 10 runs onto it along with the last Glasshoughton defender… Number 10 has been brought down here through on goal, will the defender walk? “No!” Says the Referee, but the free kick is given about 25 yards out, number 9 steps up… Hits it wide.

11 minutes now and Thorne have won a free kick on the left wing in a good crossing position, in comes the cross, Number 6 with the HEADER!! Brilliant header!! He jumps highest and guides it home and it’s a deserved 1-0 lead for Thorne here!

16th minute and Glasshoughton have a corner, in it comes, keeper comes… Misses it and it’s number 5 with the header… He’s put it wide!! Big chance there for Glasshoughton! 25 minutes gone and Thorne have a corner now, swung in, number 4 at the near post! He’s headed wide… Free header as well! Should have done better!

It’s an entertaining game here with both teams going for it! 33 minutes on the clock and a mistake from the Thorne defence sees Glasshoughton’s number 9 win the ball high up the field, he works his way around the defence and gets into a good shooting position and he goes for goal! Straight at the keeper.

Straight up the other end and Thorne win a corner, in it comes, headed away by Glasshoughton, Thorne’s number 9 gets it on the left, he crosses back in… It’s going all the way in… Keeper claws it away but only to Thorne’s number 7 at a tight angle in the six yard box… He’s put it straight at the keeper and he parries it to number 6… And he finishes… But the flag is up and it won’t count…

Right on half time and Thorne play forward, the ball falls to number 2 on the edge of the box, he makes space for the shot and goes for the curler… Wide! That would be the last action of the half with the score remaining 1-0. Great to meet Russell from Wycombe tonight who is a big name in the groundhopping brotherhood on social media!! They’re all here tonight! A free cup of tea on the Chairman now! I really wish he would accept a bank transfer for this!

That’s one way to let people know!

Second half, a slow start to this half with not many clear cut chances. 58 minutes on the clock and Glasshoughton have a free kick on the left wing in a similar position to Thorne when they got their goal, in it comes, keeper comes… But Number 9 for Glasshoughton beats him to it!! A very similar goal to Thorne’s and it’s 1-1! Whatever they can do, we can do better!

The game has slowed down sadly, very competitive but no real chances. 80 minutes gone and Glasshoughton come forward, number 9 has it on the left and he drives towards goal, he gets top the edge of the box and shoots… Keeper tips it away for a corner, in it comes, it’s cleared for another corner, in this one comes and Thorne clear.

86th minute now and Glasshoughton win the ball back high up the field, they have it in space down the right, this is dangerous! Low cross across goal and here’s number 9!! OH NO!! HE’S PUT IT OVER!!! What an absolute shocker of a miss! And he knows it…

Onto the 90th minute now and Thorne come forward now, a long ball towards number 10 who jostles with the last defender, gets into the box and he goes down…… The linesman has flagged and the Referee goes over to him… Penalty!! I agree personally, but the Glasshoughton team certainly don’t! Number 7 is given the responsibility here… He’s big enough!! He sends the keeper the wrong way and surely wins it for Thorne!! 2-1!

Tension is getting into the game now with a frustrated Glasshoughton challenging everything aggressively against Thorne but it is too little too late as the Referee blows for full time! A very happy Chris says goodbye and sings: “And we love Thorne Colliery!!” Fantastic!

FT: Club Thorne Colliery 2-1 Glasshoughton Welfare
