Glasshoughton Welfare

The Lee Johnson Signage Stadium, Leeds Road, home of Glasshoughton Welfare, based near Castleford, West Yorkshire and play their trade in Step 6 of the Non League Pyramid in the Northern Counties East League Division One.

The new season is underway!! And the games are coming in thick and fast as Staveley Miners Welfare are the visitors tonight who last season finished 10th in the Northern Counties Premier Division but have taken voluntary relegation into Division One… None of my business but I’m sure it’s for the right reasons!

Training duties are done for the night and now it’s a race against time to make kick off! Straight on to the M1 and onto the M62… Nearly there and I’m due to make kick off nothing can go wrong now… OH NO! I’ve made a wrong turn… Trust me to grab defeat from victory… Not too much of a wrong turn as I’m back en route. 3 minutes later and here I am around 3 minutes into the game with the score at 0-0. £5 to watch this NCEL tie! Beauty!

Kick Off! Staveley looking the better of the 2 teams. 12 minutes in and Staveley come forward, it’s played forward to number 8 in the box… He gets to the ball first and he’s brought down… Penalty! Yep definite for me! Number 9 steps up… And he calmly rolls it in! Staveley lead! 0-1!

2 minutes later and Glasshoughton have a throw in on the left, it’s played in and Glasshoughton have it on the left wing, number 11 crosses, number 10 is there with the header… Over!

16 minutes on the clock and Glasshoughton come forward again, it’s played to number 10 just outside the box to the left, he shoots… Keeper spills it and number 9 will get there, tight angle and he’ll play it across goal… Staveley get there and clear! Better from Glasshoughton!

Not many chances in this game as the half rolls on sadly… 39th minute and Staveley have it down the right wing, it’s played in low, it goes in the air, it falls for Staveley’s number 8 who goes for the volley… Wide! A slow first half finishes 1-0 to Staveley.

Second half, 49th minute and Glasshoughton play down the left, it’s played across to number 8 and he shoots from around 30 yards… Just wide! It did look it from my view but may have been a bit further wide in all honesty.

57 minutes now and Glasshoughton are looking good for an equaliser in this game now! They have a free kick in the Staveley half, it’s lumped into the box, number 6 is there at the far post and he heads it across goal, number 7 is there who controls and shoots…… OH! It’s off the line! What a block that was! It is a corner for Glasshoughton, in it comes… Staveley clear.

On the hour mark now and Staveley play down the left, it’s crossed in, number 9 running in with the header… Wide! Could’ve done better there perhaps?

66 minutes now and Staveley come down the right hand side, it’s played across low and it comes to number 6 at the far side to shoot first time… He’s put it wide! He should’ve hit the target there for me!

2 minutes later and it’s a good spell for Staveley here! They lay forward from the left, it’s played through to number 9, no flag here! He’s through on goal and out comes the keeper, he goes for the dink… And it’s a brilliant finish!! Flag stays down! Brilliant goal there for Staveley! 0-2! Glasshoughton not happy… They feel he was Offside! Debatable! If only non league had VAR eh?

The second goal looks to have killed the game off… And in the end it did!

FT: Glasshoughton Welfare 0-2 Staveley Miners Welfare

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 2/10 – Not any chanting but the Staveley fans did make a good racket when they scored so I’ll give an extra point for that.
  • The Ground: 6/10 – It’s a decent little setup! I like the big stand despite some restrictive views, the stand behind the goal is good too and I love the trees that give it a picturesque sort of look!
  • Expense: 10/10 – Was it worth the £5 entry? The £3.50 pin badge? The £1 tea? And the £20 fuel? Yes it was I think!
  • Overall Experience: 5/10 – It wasn’t the best game in all fairness but it is a step closer to completing this league and I’m happy to have finally visited!

23/40
