Queens United

Barnsley Road, home of Queens United based in West Melton, South Yorkshire and play their trade in the Mexborough & District Sunday League. It’s a ground that the Merry Miller has recommended to me for a while and tonight is finally the night to do it! It’s the Steve Venables Memorial Cup Final between Queens and Dog Daisy United! Bring it on!

The short trip over to Wath upon Dearne now to meet Mr & Mrs Merry Miller for some dinner before the match at the Church House. A Wetherspoons Pizza is not to be underestimated! Dominos? Papa Johns? They’re not far behind! The short journey back into West Melton for the game now and here we are! £2 to watch this final! Bingo!

Kick Off! 3 minutes in and Dog Daisy have a corner, in it comes… Number 3 with the header… Over! 10 minutes now and Queens have a free kick in the Dog Daisy half, it’s lumped into the box, flicked on by a Daisy head and it comes to Queen’s number 11… He’s missed! Should’ve done better there!

Delighted to be joined by Jack & Hannah’s friend Shaun who has made the short trip down! 16th minute and Dog Daisy have it on the left, they get into the box and it’s played across and number 10 is there… It’s wide! Close!

Dog Daisy are looking the better side here so far! 26 minutes on the clock and Dog Daisy win the ball back in the Queens half, it’s played to number 7 on the edge of the box to the left and he goes for the curler… And he finds the net!!! 0-1!! Great finish!! And it’s been coming!

1 minute later and Queens come forward straight away, it’s played to number 7 on the left and he drives into the box, he chips it across… Keeper tips it away! That might have been going all the way in! Number 6 retrieves for Queens on the right and he crosses, number 9 with the header… Deflected over! Close! Corner for Queens, in it comes… Dog Daisy clear.

30th minute now and Dog Daisy hit the ball long, it’s over the Queens defence and number 7 runs onto it and he’s through, he gets into the box and shoots… And he has scored again!!! In off the post!! Dog Daisy are cruising to victory here!! 0-2!!

3 minutes later and Dog Daisy come forward again, it’s worked out to the right for number 2, he plays it across and here’s number 10… It’s blocked by his own man but here comes the rebound! Blocked again! Another shot from Dog Daisy… Deflected out for a corner, in it comes… A foul on the Queens man and it’s a free kick to Queens. Dog Daisy continue to shine and at half time the score is 0-2.

Second half, a slow game now with no team showing any real signs of creating any clear cut chances. Queens need 2 goals here, can they find them? 65th minute and the Queens keeper plays it forward… It’s not gone far and it’s fallen straight to Dog Daisy’s number 10 and he’s got an open goal from 30 yards… He’s hit it well over…

3 minutes later and Dog Daisy play it forward, it’s played through to number 8 in the box on the left, keeper comes… Number 8 slides for it and gets there first… It’s rolled just wide! 73 minutes gone and Dog Daisy come again, it’s played to number 2 to shoot on the edge of the box… Just over!

Dog Daisy are looking more and more comfortable as the game goes on. Has this game got beyond Queens? 82 minutes now and Dog Daisy have a free kick from around 30 yards out, number 16 steps up… He’s hit the bar!! So close again!

89th minute and Dog Daisy come again, it’s played out right to number 16 and he plays it across to number 11 sliding in… It deserves to be 3-0… And it is!!! 0-3!! The referee blows for full time shortly after! Congratulations to the Steve Venables Memorial Cup winners 2022! Dog Daisy United!!

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 2/10 – A fairly big crowd here tonight and you could tell there was a crowd here as there were a few cheers and jeers throughout.
  • The Ground: 8/10 – I have to say for a Sunday League club this is immaculate!! Lovely little setup! I don’t think there are many if any better setups for a Sunday League club around and if there are, I’d like to see it! Lovely trees in the background, banking to elevate your view, changing rooms, benches and the pitch is an absolute carpet! Well done Queens United!
  • Expense: 10/10 – Free game!
  • Overall Experience: 8/10 – I enjoyed tonight! Great to see Mr & Mrs Merry Miller as always and great to meet Shaun! A decent game here tonight as well!
