Rotherham United

The New York Stadium, home of Rotherham United based in South Yorkshire. Nicknamed the “Millers” after their old ground ‘Millmoor’ was on the same site as a flour mill. 19th October 2019 and Rotherham are at home to Oxford United. Both teams targetting promotion at the end of the season so this could be a tasty one. A simple tram journey away from Sheffield and I was at the ground. £25 to watch this League 1 clash! Fair enough! A first time visiting this ground for me so I got in early and enjoyed a pre-match drink!

Kick Off! A bright start from the home side who forced Oxford to be alert at the back. 23 minutes gone and some good play from Oxford. Cameron Brannagan with the ball on the left who squared it to Tariqe Fosu, cuts onto his left and fires at goal… IT’S IN!!! 25 YARDS OUT!! WHAT A FINISH!! 0-1! Oxford were beginning to play some good football to the frustration of the home supporters. But Rotherham were able to catch the Oxford defenders out, Matt Crooks in the area finding HASTIE!! OFF THE LINE!! So close for Rotherham.

35 minutes gone and Rotherham with the ball, Michael Ihiekwe driving forward for Rotherham, playing the ball to the right hand side and the ball was delievered into the box towards Matt Crooks who headed into the air, IHIEKWE IN THE AIR… IT’S 1-1!!! The game began to open up but at half time, the score remained 1-1.

Second half, a slow start to the half by both teams. 58 minutes and Oxford had the ball on the left, cross comes in towards Matty Taylor… 1-2! Headed in by Taylor and Oxford regain the lead! A few minutes later and Oxford had a corner which was delivered, a header in from the edge of the box, IT’S MATTY TAYLOR AGAIN… WHAT A SAVE!! Iversen with a point blank save there, should have been 1-3. Oxford were the better team for the majority of the second half but with minutes left to play, Rotherham piled on the pressure but would ultimately lose out to Oxford.

Millmoor! The old ground, still here after all these years. I wonder if they’ll ever be a game played there again some day?

FT: Rotherham United 1-2 Oxford United

  • The Ground: 8/10 – A very nice facility!!
  • Expense: 7/10 – £25 was a bit steep in my opinion, however, a great game to watch as a neutral.
