Sheffield Wednesday

Hillsborough, home of Sheffield Wednesday located at around a 10 minute drive from Sheffield City Centre. Nicknamed the “Owls” after their move to Owlerton, Sheffield and they play in Blue & White stripes. 4th March 2019 and it’s the Steel City Derby!!

We got to Hillsborough, Sheffield in plenty of time, let’s sink a few jars! Atmosphere in the bars was buzzing and the Wednesday fans were optimistic! Wednesday were languishing in mid table whereas United were fighting for an automatic promotion spot for the Premier League. After a few pre match beverages, we walked up Middlewood Road, through Hillsborough Park and into the ground. £39 to watch this Steel City Derby! Pricey! Atmosphere was beginning to start in the ground and the excitement was kicking in! The teams walked out to a wall of noise! Jeff Beck’s hit “Silver Lining” is playing now and the Wednesday fans have tweaked it. “HI HO SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY!” The loudest the Wednesday fans have shouted their anthem all season presumably?

Kick Off! Sheffield United had the ball down the right wing and the ball was delivered in towards the former Wednesday man GARY MADINE… Straight at Kieron Westwood to deny what would have been a famous goal in Steel City Derby history and with 4 minutes gone, it looked like this could be a classic! The famous band heard at England matches were in the Hillsborough Kop with the trumpet and drum dictating the atmosphere from the Wednesday fans. “We’re the famous Sheffield WEDNESDAY!” Unfortunately the first half didn’t pan out as much as the first chance looked like it would and the score at half time was 0-0.

Second half, the game continued as the first half ended, it had bore draw written all over it. But then Sheffield United started to edge it and took the game to Sheffield Wednesday. But on 65 minutes, Rolando Aarons had the ball on the left hand side and measured a low cross into the middle, IT’S SAM HUTCHINSON… SAVED! Straight at the keeper, should have been 1-0 and I must have been the only one in the Hillsborough Kop who had their heart in their mouth then. Sheffield United started to take control of the game but ultimately couldn’t find the winner.

FT: Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Sheffield United

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 10/10 – A fantastic atmosphere throughout! Both sets of fans were at it but Wednesday had the upper hand and the England band were fantastic!
  • The Ground: 8/10 – A lovely ground full of history and character.
  • Expense: 7/10 – As much as I enjoyed the atmosphere, the game was a bore draw and for £39, it’s not the best value.
  • Overall Experience: 8/10 – The atmosphere made the game less of a bore draw, but I definitely would have loved a goal to see if it could have got any better.

33/40
