Bracken Edge, home of Yorkshire Amateur AFC based in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, West Yorkshire and play their trade in Step 5 of the Non League Pyramid in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division. Nicknamed the “Ammers” as it’s in the name ‘Amateurs’.
A turbulent time for the Ammers… Last season this club finished 10th in Step 4 but unfortunately the ground grading police were up to their old tricks and decided that Bracken Edge wasn’t good enough for the league and out they were… Today they find themselves bottom of the NCEL Premier Division… How times change. Tonight they face Golcar United who themselves aren’t doing too well.
It’s my second visit here and It’s a straight drive up the M1 for me and here I am with around 30 minutes till kick off. £6 for this NCEL 3 pointer! Tremendous! A quick burger and chips stop later and Jake Dunford from Oldham! There’s always someone! Out come the teams, this could be a vital win for one of these teams tonight, let’s roll!
Kick Off! A slow start to the game here sadly… Great to meet Steeton fan Dan here tonight though who is keeping me and Jake company as well. 15 minutes in and Golcar play down the right, it’s worked across to number 10, he shoots from 20 yards… Straight at the keeper.
26th minute and it’s a corner for Yorkshire, in it comes… Curran-Nicholls with the header… Straight at the keeper.
32 minutes now and it’s a corner for Golcar, in it comes… Flicked on and it falls to number 9 at point blank… Keeper gets there and holds on to it.
41 minutes gone and Golcar have the ball on the right, it’s played into the middle, number 10 with the header… Wide! A poor half of football stays at 0-0 for half time… Hold on! Trouble at the mill here… Yorkshire’s number 9 and Golcar’s number 8 are squaring off here… They will need separating. It could be a tasty second half here!
Second half, 53 minutes on the watch and Golcar win the ball back in midfield, they drive forward, it’s played to number 11 just inside the box on the right, he shoots… Keeper saves!
58 minutes now and it’s a free kick for Yorkshire on the right, it’s played in, Yorkshire win it in the box on the left and it’s fizzed across, Jamal Stewart is there… IT’S A GOAL! The right place at the right time! The Ammers have taken the lead would you believe!! Golcar are shell shocked… 1-0!
Straight from kick off now and Golcar bomb straight down the left, it’s played in low… Yorkshire get there to clear for the corner… Oh dear what’s going on here…? The game is paused and both benches are running over to their right… Something kicking off in the crowd it appears… Yorkshire’s number 9 is being held back by his own fans here… The Yorkshire bench are not happy! A word said there by a Golcar fan it seems… Number 9 goes into the dressing room… The Referee has called him back out… I think we all know what’s coming here… Yep… It’s a Red Card! Yorkshire Amateur are furious! It will still be 11v11 as number 9 was substituted at half time.
64th minute and the game is back underway. The Golcar corner is finally taken… Yorkshire clear but Golcar get it back and it’s played to number 9 in the box on the left, he cuts inside and shoots… Tipped onto the post!! Brilliant save! Yorkshire clear.
68th minute now and Golcar come forward, it’s played into the box from the right, headed across to number 10 to shoot… OHH! What a save!! What a strong left hand that was from the keeper to tip it over! Corner for Golcar, in it comes… Cleared.
84 minutes gone and Golcar are pressing for the equaliser now but Yorkshire break forward, the ball is played over the top to Jamal Stewart who gets into the box on the right, he shoots… He’s dragged it just wide!
Golcar keep on coming but are struggling to get in behind this Yorkshire backline who are defending with their lives here.
Into the last minute of stoppage time here and Golcar hit it long, it’s come for number 10 in the box on the right, he plays it across… Yorkshire get there and clear… That’s it!! Yorkshire Amateurs have won!!! What a night for them! Is this the start of something good for the Ammers!? “Serves you right for Muscat that!” After the Golcar fan fight earlier…

- Atmosphere: 2/10 – Not too bad! Certainly livened up in the second half.
- The Ground: 5/10 – It’s not a bad ground! There isn’t too much here admittedly but I like what they have got! The stand is a bit run down but a great stand but I have to say I would like to see just a little more to the ground if possible as it’s never easy to expand when you are in the middle of houses…
- Expense: 9/10 – £20 fuel, £6 to get in and £6 for food. Worth it? Nearly! A very good 1-0 drama filled game but a boring first half sadly.
- Overall Experience: 8/10 – A good game all in all! Great to meet Dan and great to see Jake here once again! Definitely glad to see the ground and club once again!
