Maidenhead United

York Road, home of Maidenhead United based in Berkshire and play their trade in the National League. Nicknamed the “Magpies” which I’m sure you can guess what colour they play in…?

For the second time this season, I will be joining Gary and friends for a York City away day and today it’s Maidenhead United so it’s down the M1, onto the A43 and a quick pit stop at the Flight Deck café in Brackley in true fashion and then back on towards the M40 and into Maidenhead just in time for the second half of Manchester City vs Liverpool.

Off the tap is the pub of choice and great to see a good following from York in there including Joe Gibbo! Trent Alexander-Arnold rescues a point for Liverpool! Well done the Redmen! Now back off to the ground!

£20 to get in here! A bit much… The teams are ready! It’s a cold one but come on City!

Kick Off! York have started the better of the 2 teams so far. 20 minutes in and Alex Woodyard concedes a free kick on halfway and the Referee is going into his pocket and… Red Card! Really?! The York fans are incensed! It didn’t look like a Red from here put it that way! York down to 10 men.

Maidenhead are pushing for the first goal now but York seem to be containing them pretty comfortably. 38th minute and Maidenhead have it down the left, Nathaniel-George goes for goal… Wide! At half time it remains goalless.

Second half, York starting the better of the 2 teams but Maidenhead are starting to push on again like in the first half.

68th minute and Maidenhead get into the box… Down he goes… Penalty! The keeper brings the Maidenhead man down and now they have a real chance to take the lead. Here comes the penalty… SAVED! Another York penalty save I have witnessed now!

3 minutes later and Maidenhead come again, they get into the box on the left with Nathaniel-George and he shoots… It’s gone in… Maidenhead lead! The Penalty save has worn off now… 1-0!

76th minute and Maidenhead come again, Casey Petit makes space for the shot… he’s hit the top of the bar! So close!

87th minute now and York play down the right, it’s crossed in, Callum Howe is there… AND HE HAS GOT IT!! WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT!!! City have surely snatched a point! Scenes at York Road! 1-1!

Maidenhead press for the winner… But the 10 men have held on for a precious point!

FT: Maidenhead United 1-1 York City

Ratings

  • Atmosphere: 4/10 – York fans in good spirits but it’s very difficult to generate an atmosphere in an open space…
  • The Ground: 6.5/10 – Underwhelming I thought sadly… It certainly has some good features like the stand with the writing and the backdrop but I didn’t think much else of the rest of the ground such as the mini football pitch and the other terrace…
  • Expense: 7/10 – £20 is a bit steep for this level but we got the drama on our side so can’t complain too much.
  • Overall Experience: 9/10 – Always a great day with Gary and friends and great to see drama at the end!

26.5/40
