Ossett United

Ingfield Stadium, home of Ossett United based in West Yorkshire and play their trade in the Northern Premier League Division One East. Nicknamed the Sheepicorns… What a nickname!!! Very Unique! This town ain’t big enough for the 2 of us!! In 2018, Ossett Town and Ossett Albion decided to join forces to form Ossett United and tonight they face Pontefract Collieries on Mad Friday of all days… Will it be a Mad Friday of football at Ossett?

For the first time ever, I will be driving myself to the ground!!! Will I make it there in one piece…? Of course!!! Who really ever doubted me…? Or doubted that motorways are the safest roads?? 1 hour drive later and here I am! £9 to get in here! Levels!

Kick Off! “Oh Ossett United!” A big group of lads behind the goal on the far side are going for it tonight!!! 9 minutes in and the ball comes to Jack Greenhough in midfield, he drives forward and shoots on the edge of the box… Keeper parries… IT’S TURNED IN!!! But the flag is up… No goal! Offside! Ossett fans loved that one!

“Ole ole ole ole! Ponte Ponte!” The travelling Pontefract fans giving it large now!! 11th minute and they have a corner, in it comes… It comes to the far post… The header tipped over by the keeper, it’s another corner… It’s whipped in and cleared by Ossett. A good start for Pontefract! 24th minute and Ossett come forward, but Pontefract dispossess them and clear, Ossett get it back and it’s headed forward to Fogarty in the box… The flag is up! He scores but it won’t count…

“Oh Ossett United!” Still going strong in the Ossett end! 30th minute and Ossett come forward down the left wing, they get into the box… Shouts for a Penalty… Waved away! Ossett cross it into the box and here’s Reon Potts with the header… It’s wide! Big chance there!

33 minutes on the clock and Ossett play a long ball forward for James Walshaw to run onto and he’s in on goal here… Keeper saves his shot but only into the path of Reon Potts… He rolls it in!!! Ossett lead here! A big cheer from the home crowd!! 1-0!!

39th minute and Ossett Play a ball over the top on the left hand side which is delightful for Haswell to run onto and he gets there and drives into the box, he goes for the far corner… It’s just wide! So close! Ossett go in at the break 1-0 up.

Second half, “OUFC! OUFC!” 50 minutes played and Ossett play another long ball down the left for Haswell, he gets there and plays it in to James Walshaw… He beats the keeper to it and goes down… No! Says the Referee! Ossett not happy! I don’t think it was a Penalty myself. 1 minute later and Pontefract have it on the right wing, it’s crossed in… Scott Smith is there at the far post… He heads it in!!! It’s all level!! 1-1!!

The fog is starting to make the other side of the ground disappear here… Let’s hope it doesn’t cause an early finish tonight! 56 minutes on the watch and Pontefract come down the right wing again, played in low to Scott Smith… It’s a poor shot and the keeper saves comfortably. 60 minutes now and Joao Rangel has it on the right for Pontefract again, he plays it across low to Gavin Rothery who shoots… A trailing leg save by the Ossett keeper!!

65th minute and Ossett have a free kick in the Pontefract half, it’s lumped into the box… Headed away and it’s loose… Luke Hogg has gone in 2 footed there… He’s won the ball but Pontefract aren’t happy and tempers are flaring!! The Referee has got the Red card out… And Luke Hogg is off! Unlucky for me there! He’s gone in dangerously but he has won the ball so I’d say it’s a Yellow! Will this be a turning point in the game?

“Oh Ossett United!” The Ossett faithful will not break their spirit! 72 minutes and Gavin Rothery has the ball in the box, he cuts inside and shoots… HE FINDS THE NET!!!! Pontefract lead!!! 1-2!! 79th minute and Pontefract have a corner, in it comes… Oh! It’s Luke Hinsley at the far post, surely! YES!!! He couldn’t miss that! The ball falls for him just outside the 6 yard box and he finishes!! 1-3!! Pontefract run down the clock with no response from Ossett and take the 3 points back to Pontefract!

  • Atmosphere: 8/10 – Those Ossett lads were outstanding tonight!! Never stopped! Loved the plant pot chant at the end when they were 3-1 down! The Pontefract fans did themselves proud too but they weren’t as loud as Ossett!
  • The Ground: 10/10 – I love this ground! Stands on every side, 2 lovely bars, one with a vantage point and plenty of character!!! What a ground this is for this level!!!
  • Expense: 9/10 – £9 is a great price!! A Red card and 4 goals altogether is a great deal!
