The Pinto Property Stadium, home of Worsbrough Bridge Athletic based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and play their trade in Step 6 of the non league pyramid in the Northern Counties East League Division One. The FA Vase is back!!! First Vase game of the season for me and I’m sure they’ll be more of this fantastic competition as the season goes on! But for now, it’s my second visit to Worsbrough Bridge after my first one being a defeat for Shirebrook Town back in 2013… Hopefully my latest visit for the visit of Maine Road will be a cracker!
The X17 bus is calling for me and off I go to the ground, 40 minutes from Sheffield later, and here we are! £5 to watch this FA Vase tie! Smashing! A lot of familiar faces here today! Mariner Chris, Tony, Graham K, Ian, Turnip and the Oldham groundhopper in attendance today!! Gonna be a good day!!
Kick Off! Worsbrough Bridge straight out of the blocks! It’s played out to the left to number 11 who drives into the box, he’s brought down… Referee waves it away… Debatable I’d say. 10 minutes in and Maine Road come forward down the right with number 9, he drives inside and shoots on the edge of the box… Tipped over by the Worsbrough keeper! Corner, in it comes… Worsbrough clear.
23rd minute and Maine Road work it forward, it’s played to number 11 in the box on the right, he shoots… Just over! Close! 1 minute later and Maine Road come again, a long ball is played forward, Maine Road get onto it and it’s played over the top into the box for number 8, he takes a touch and goes for goal on the half volley… Brilliant finish!!! 0-1!! Maine Road have the lead here!
It’s been a poor game overall with not too much for both teams to shout about, but at least we’ve got a goal!! 39th minute and Worsbrough have a free kick around 20 yards out, number 4 steps up… Over!
At half time, the score remains 1-0 to Maine Road. Second half, 51st minute and Maine Road come forward, it’s played to number 8 around 20 yards out and he shoots… Good save by the keeper! 58 minutes on the clock and Worsbrough come forward, it’s played to number 9 on the right, he cuts inside in the box and he shoots… Deflected… AND IN!!! 1-1!! It’s level!! Unlucky for Maine Road but wonderful for Worsbrough!
64th minute and Worsbrough come forward again now, a chipped through ball is played into the box towards number 16… He doesn’t connect with it and it rolls wide… 74th minute now and Maine Road’s number 8 comes forward down the left, he gets into the box and drives at goal, he shoots… It’s off the line by Worsbrough! So close there for Maine Road!
86 minutes on the clock and it could well be Penalties here today! Worsbrough play forward with number 16, he gets to the edge of the box and he let’s fly… Just wide! Into the 90th minute now and Maine Road press for a winner, the ball is flicked on to number 9 on the edge of the box and he shoots on the volley! Just wide!
Will we have a late winner here today? Or is it going to be a Penalty Shootout? Into Stoppage time and Maine Road play a long ball into the box, Maine Road’s number 11 gets it down, he tries to take on the Worsbrough defender, he gets his shot away… THEY’VE GOT IT!!!! MAINE ROAD HAVE STOLEN IT!!! SCENES!! The Maine Road bench are on the pitch! And surely they are through to the next round! 1-2!
Worsbrough look shell shocked… They have just enough time to find an equaliser. Worsbrough play a long ball forward, Maine Road head out for a throw in, in comes the throw in, played out to the left, lumped into the box… Worsbrough win the header but don’t connect with it cleanly… The Referee blows for full time! Maine Road are through! Worsbrough are out!

- Atmosphere: 1/10 – Quite a few here today but not much noise sadly.
- The Ground: 5/10 – It’s not a bad ground! The stand is what makes it for me!! Good views from some angles but it isn’t accessible at all angles sadly.
- Expense: 10/10 – £5 is a good price and with late drama, can only mean one thing!
- Overall Experience: 10/10 – Great to see everyone today once again!! The game was a decent affair overall and the late drama adds to it massively!!
