The Centenary Ground, home of Southwell City based in Nottinghamshire and play their trade in Step 6 of the Non League Pyramid in the United Counties League Division One.
For the first time ever, Southwell City are a Step 6 club!! They won the Nottinghamshire Senior League last year and are on the rise at last! It’s a rare Monday night as Southwell face Rainworth Miners Welfare in a mid-table clash and for the first time in what seems like forever, I’ll be joined by Match Days Joe! COME ON!!
It’s straight down the parkway and onto the M1, onto the A57 and onto the A617 and here we are! Right at the side of the pitch. £3 to watch this game! Tremendous! Match Days Joe is here! Vinny is here and so is Luke PL2NL! The squad is strong tonight! The teams are ready and so are we! We may be missing Monday Night Football with the Premier League but not here!
Kick Off! 4 minutes in and Southwell have a corner, it’s played to the edge of the box for the shot… Deflected… And it’s in!! It’s come off Ed Munton for Southwell and it’s 1-0!
12 minutes now and it’s a corner for Rainworth, in it comes… It’s loose and it’s pinball in the six yard box… Surely…… The keeper claims the loose ball somehow… “Such a non league bit of play!” Says Match Days Joe.
Great to see long serving groundhopper Dave Woodings here tonight!! We will get that podcast sone one day I hope… The squad really is strong tonight!
27th minute and Rainworth have a free kick in a good shooting position from about 25 yards, number 10 goes for the curler… Just wide!
34 minutes now and the Referee is having a word with the Rainworth manager here for his protests… No cards shown.
37 minutes on the clock and Southwell play down the right, Liam Moran gets into the box and plays it across, Rainworth get a foot to it but it comes back to Moran who goes for the volley… Brilliant save! Corner, in it comes… Cleared by Rainworth.
41 minutes gone and Rainworth play down the left, in comes the cross, it comes nicely for number 9 who heads it towards goal… Off the line! It comes out to number 6 who goes for goal from 25 yards… Wide!
2 minutes later and Rainworth’s number 7 wins the ball back on the right and he drives into the box, he plays it across to number 9 who takes a touch… And he equalises for Rainworth!! Good passage of play for Rainworth and they are level! 1-1!
2 minutes after that and Rainworth are in again here, number 3 finds himself through on goal… Keeper makes the save but number 9 tussles with the defender and gets there first to the loose ball… Off the line and cleared… Wait no it isn’t… It’s rebounded off his own man and here’s number 3 in the box again… OFF THE LINE AGAIN! How on earth did that stay out!!? Southwell clear and somehow go in at half time level at 1-1! Wow!
Second half, 48th minute and the ball is played back to the Rainworth keeper who hits it forward… But only to Pat Ferguson for Southwell who runs into the box and tussles with the Rainworth defender… He’s hacked him down there! The Referee… Has given a free kick to Rainworth? Oh wow! A stone wall Penalty for me there has somehow gone the other way and the Southwell manager is not happy! The Referee is going over to him… It’s a Yellow Card for his protests!
52nd minute and Southwell play down the left, it’s crossed in, the Rainworth defender gets there and he’s flicked it off Liam Moran for Southwell… And it’s gone in! Southwell lead again! Their early second half pressure has paid off!! 2-1!
3 minutes later and Southwell win the ball back in midfield, it’s come nicely for Liam Moran who holds off his man and he’s through on goal here, he shoots… Keeper gets a hand to it… But it’s gone in!! Southwell are breaking away here!! 3-1!
69 minutes on the clock and Southwell play down the right, it’s crossed in, it’s headed back across goal, the ball has spun nicely… But Rainworth manage to get it away… The Referee blows… Penalty!? What for? Has he given this one for not giving the other one? Southwell have a Penalty! Chris Bowles will take… Keeper gets a hand to it… But it’s an emphatic Penalty and it’s 4 for Southwell! 4-1!
The game goes on and the pitch is getting muddier and muddier, Rainworth have no answer in the end…

- The Ground: 5/10 – It’s not too bad! The clubhouse is amazing! There is talk of new features to be added to the ground so it will only get better!!
- Expense: 10/10 – £3 to get in, £3 for a pin badge and £3 for food, was it worth it? Yes!
- Overall Experience: 6/10 – Good to see everyone again and good to see more goals!
